This is something that I have never been able to fully understand; the reasons some people have for being vegetarians.

So I would just like to ask, to any vegetarian escapists here, why? What are your reasons for it?

I don't necessarily have a problem with it - though I do kinda hate to see people give up meat for the sole reason of animal cruelty and that pandora's box (so please don't open it unless you feel it's much more relevant, this is more for me to explore people's opinions rather than debate).
Some people just can't handle the intense flavour and satisfaction of meat.

I pity those people.

Can you just develop lactose intolerence though? As I say I never used to have a problem with dairy, it wasnt till I moved away from home and stopped buying milk and cheese. Now on the odd occasion I DO have some its.... noticeable.
Sure you can just develop it. With whites (Caucasians) in general I think the average age of it really setting in is between 18 and 25 or so.

Some people dislike the taste of meat, and some find the thought of eating what was once a living creature abhorrent.

I'm a proud eater of meat, but I can kind of see where they're coming from. Or I could, if meat wasn't so bloody delicious :p

Not one, myself, but totally understand the most popular reasoning.

I mean, I'm apparently in the minority in that I find chocolate ice cream absolutely disgusting and terrible.
Don't worry, you're not alone :p
Im... just going to join the train of people who dont like chocolate Icecream.
*shudders*

Where was i?
Ah yes.

I think it has something to do with them feeling somehow guilty about eating a dead animal.
Which sounds ridiculous to me.
But they can go eat Leaves and Flowers for all it matters to me. I have my delicious food, and its all the more for me :)

Because meat is much more nutritious than any vegetable.
Yes, yes it is. You gain vital nutrients from Meat that virtually require you to take Multivitamins without them.

I loved meat. But i decided to try out the vegeterian way and i am happy.
I feel better and i lost some weight as well actually.
I do still eat fish though.

So yeah, to answer that question: Why ?
Why not ? Vegeterian lifestyle is healthier so that is why i do it.

I'm not a vegeterian, but I'm considering to become one. I don't think that we shouldn't eat meat (it's delicious) in general, but the way it's produced is terrible. Watch this:

I grew up in a farm, and i have seen and helped to kill chickens.
You know, take an axe and chop the head off.
But this video was to me more disturbing than killing a chicken myself.
The way they keep them in the slaughterhouse there. Man, that is discusting.

Eh, I have plenty of reasons, ranging from health to convenience. But I guess the one you'd be most interested in is that I think the meat industry is wasteful. When you think of all the resources that go into raising one single cow that feeds a tiny amount of people, it's quite ridiculous.

Yeah, when you take into account all the problems the meat industry contributes to, which includes deforestation and third world hunger, it just goes against all my principles as a human rights' activist to contribute my money to the meat industry, since it basically prioritises giving land and grain to cows instead of to give people in poverty places to live and farm or to feed children dying of starvation.

But, again, these are my principles. I don't give a fuck what anybody else eats. My conscience is my conscience, and people who think differently are under no obligation to agree with me. *shrug*

While I am not a vegetarian and do love meat I have lived the kinda food lifestyle several times.

simply put cute vegetarians who will not kiss someone after they have eaten meat so me being the one kissing them cannot eat meat.

do not really see what the fuss is about it did not really change anything i did, it did not cause me to go into protein withdrawal and I got to make out with cuteness so.

however retract the cute vegetarian and I will go back to eating meat.

This or in the cases of two people I know:

Your parents were vegetarians and raised you in it and now you can't eat meats because they make you ill.

You're a douchebag that wants to feel superior to other people. - This one is an acquaintance of mine, im not saying all vegetarians are like this, he's always trying to be better than everyone else to the point that he is loads in debt because he spends too much money on shit he doesn't need just so he can say he has it. His latest feat is becoming a vegetarian and never fucking shutting up about it.

Because I feel it's irresponsible to eat meat when there are such easy alternatives which don't involve killing our cousins en masse. Now sure my refrain isn't going to topple the meat industry but I for one prefer to have my principles and actually act on them, even if it's inconsequential, than just sit around whining about it. Hence, I the meat eat not.

I agree there. It's just not how chocolate is supposed to be.

A *lot* of people are lactose intolerant.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001321/

Lactose intolerance is more common in people with Asian, African, Native American, or Mediterranean ancestry than it is among northern and western Europeans.

Lactose intolerance is very common in adults and is not dangerous. Approximately 30 million American adults have some amount of lactose intolerance by age 20.

To me, this means just don't eat the stuff. Dairy is horrible for you; I'd say worse than meat. It leeches more calcium from the body that it provides. If I had to eat animal products I would easily decide to add meat and fish back into my diet over dairy.

http://www.makingpages.org/health/calcium.osteoporosis.html
Yes but if you are lactose tolerant... why would you not drink dairy when it is so nutritious, tasty and pervasive.

It's like saying "some people are allergic to peanuts, therefore I shouldn't eat peanuts" what about YOU the individual. If you are of European descent then most likely you can digest lactose right through adulthood to an adequate level.

I don't know if you are making the argument "There is no shame in being lactose intolerant, many people are" but you seem to give the impression that you should "just not eat the stuff" confusing statistics of tolerance with some kind of democratic vote on food groups.

Milk is such a good source of nutrition for those who are too - whatever - to eat meat.

Frankly I think this lactose intolerance thing is being blown out of proportion, like back in the 90's with people's paranoia over cholesterol in eggs. Turns out its not problem at all and eggs are one of the healthiest and nutritious way of obtaining protein and fat in your diet.

Two part reason for me. First is the carbon footprint. A diet including (red) meat equals something like two cars in terms of carbon emissions from the livestock.

Secondly is the speciesism argument. Essentially, how can you justify killing a cow for food when you wouldn't eat a human who has died of natural causes? Its technically a form of discrimination which means you should not be able to take any moral high-ground against other forms of discrimination such as racism and sexism.

Oh god I hate chocolate ice cream. I don't mind chocolate, but the taste of chocolate ice cream makes me feel sick.

O.T. Because they don't want to eat meat.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I've definitely considered it.

Better question, why is eating meat something to be proud of? I hear that all the time, even in this very thread, as if it's some sort of trial of masculinity. But you didn't kill it or do anything impressive. What's so impressive about going to the store, buying something, and lighting it on fire?
Intelligent observation sir.

People want to seem powerful and be at the top of the food chain and cover their insecurites is my guess.

I like the way you think.
Thats only half of the thought i guess. There are people that seem to have a problem with how I think so I should say, I want to eat the rabbit AND the rabbit's food, and probably w/e else was going to eat the rabbit and what was going to eat that animal and so on.
