Sounds like a nice idea, but I'd like to point out one thing. In the movie Daybreakers (about vampires) there is a phrase used which applies greatly here:
"There will always be those willing to pay a little more for the real thing."
So what could we expect if this works? Mass produced low-grade meat for the masses, and just as many butchered animals to provide the real meat for those willing to pay greatly inflated prices for the actual product.
So the question becomes- are we willing to pay five times what we do for bacon in order to feed the poor? Probably yes, but you never know.
