Suntory has announced that all their soft drink machines are now free in order to help people overcome the food shortages that are going on.

Maybe this is just me, but I think Japan is one of the few countries where a company could do this and people wouldn't just go around from vending machine to vending machine filling up shopping carts with free drinks.

Edit: another story I read on Japanese twitter: apparently Tokyo Disneyland is doing the same with its snacks. One of the guys passing out the food noticed a couple of punk HS girls taking multiple bags at once. He was about to say something when he noticed that they were actually handing the extra bags out to small children that couldn't get anything due to the large crowds.

You can easily get food from vending machines there too. It'd be more helpful to make them free.

Glad to hear it. Soft drinks aren't exactly the most nutritious, but they're certainly better than nothing, given the situation.

I agree if this were the us people would stuff the lot of it into their cars then drive off to raid the next one.

It's nice to see them taking action, but soft drinks? Let's hope they also have bottles of water. >>
You can get ANYTHING in a Japanese vending machine. Even beer and panties.

I was just about to mention those two examples.
Perhaps they should put up free Suvival-kit vending machines?

*puts on a hook hand and closes one eye* Ya see?! That's the God of Japanese Game Exports sendin' a message!

Anyway in all seriousness, I hope they get through it. Allowing people to freely use their vendors is an action of goodwill we couldn't expect from most people.

Either that or Nuka-Cola. But then, that might send the wrong message...

My question is the company trying to milk positive PR out of something out of their control? Or is it trying to protect its investment knowing that the worse it gets the more likely their vending machines will be raped and pillaged for anything of value?

Yes, we give you free drinks... Prease do not smash our macheens

Yes, but the post specifically states soft drink machines (which I assume means the company mentioned only deals in soft drinks).

I dont think they are at the rioting stage just yet. And yeah, it is probably partially a PR move, but i'd classify it as a win-win in this case.

Suntory machines usually have juice and water in addition to soda.

Yeah seriously, I doubt in the U.S., where , probably because .
Didn't mean this as a slam against any specific country. I was just surprised that they are apparently able to do this without people raiding the machines.

Wonder how long vending machines would last here if that happened.
LOL I know right? XD
I could see the first guy in line taking them all.

"They're uh, um, for my family. It's a really big family".
