If that happened here...there wouldn't be anything to give from the vending machines; someone would have already smashed it open and taken everything

Suntory machines usually have juice and water in addition to soda.

Didn't mean this as a slam against any specific country. I was just surprised that they are apparently able to do this without people raiding the machines.
Good. And now I feel like it will mean something beyond "FREE SODA!"
Thanks for clarifying for me. ^^

as an american i am appalled at the accuracy of the above assessment of our total lack of morals in the "hey look free stuff" situations

we are essentially locusts

then again the vending machine company is probably more worried about their machines then the products in them. making the products free means nobody is gonna take a crow bar to the machine.

It's probably as much of a measure to stop looting and vandalism, as it is solidarity

As lovely as it is for them to do this, I can't help but think it's a cheap shot at publisity to look like a lovely company so when everything is OK again in Japan, everyone will buy their drinks.

I have an aunt and uncle who are currently trying to survive in Japan. Food and water are difficult to come by so the vending machines would be a life saver. The vending machines in Japan dispense more than just soft drinks, you can find pretty much anything in them.

You can easily get food from vending machines there too. It'd be more helpful to make them free.
I hear they also

You can get ANYTHING in a Japanese vending machine. Even beer and panties.
I was just about to mention those two examples.
Perhaps they should put up free Suvival-kit vending machines?
Either that or Nuka-Cola. But then, that might send the wrong message...
I heard some contain porta-pussies.
Dont think to hard about that.

My question is the company trying to milk positive PR out of something out of their control? Or is it trying to protect its investment knowing that the worse it gets the more likely their vending machines will be raped and pillaged for anything of value?

Yes, we give you free drinks... Prease do not smash our macheens
Likely a combination of kindness, and what you said.

BTW, don't vendning machines in japan have entire meals, toys, and other stuff in them?

well japan can a strange place so not really that surprised
Yup. Used even. I think I heard of worse things in their vending machines, but my memories a bit iffy on the subject.

But anyways, don't call Japan weird on the iternet, or they'll send Domo-kun and Godzilla after you. Then you'll need to get a guy to summon the Green Ranger's Dragon to combat Godzilla.

That's what I thought...

So essentially everything is free?

I actually can't help but smile at this act of kindness.

I refuse to see what the cynics claim is a 'marketing tactic'.

This just made my...Night. Atleast I will sleep with a smile on my face.

And they might just have done it for the good PR but it still a nice thing to do.

That's good and it doesn't matter at all whether they did that for good PR or out of kindness or a combination of both. What matters is that the people who need food and water have an easier way to get it now.

Whoa, I actually meant that as mutual agreement. I'm thoroughly convinced the American public wouldn't hesitate to stock up with grocery carts and sell them back at quadruple the price.
multiplying by zero :p
but seriously, I wish people weren't so greedy here, a free bottle of water would have been so useful.
