While yeah, I was MOOOORE than happy to see RDR win and Harris win cause his dialogue made me sometimes burst with laughter (they are called sticking abilities)-(fuck black ops in both ends)
I haven't played that game, but from the show itself, I was a little disappointed. His sex/porn jokes weren't funny, and he's much better on HIMYM, in my opinion.

I find the lack of Metro 2033 disturbing...
I bought that on release, but I have yet to finish it. I've only heard good things from other gamers though.

Went to Red Dead Redemption.

The nominees were:

Red Dead Redemption
Call of Duty: Black Ops
God of War III
Halo: Reach
Mass Effect 2

Made me extremely happy that it beat out Black Ops, 'cause it was ridiculous that Black Ops won character of the year. >.<

How'd you guys like the VGAs this year (assuming you watched it)?
F'ing sequels. I want some new IPs.

Something I'm not noticing anyone mention is Guillermo Del Toro's bid for a new horror game. If this "inSane" game he's working on gets off the ground, there could really be something there.
I mentioned it in one of my prior posts, but it was likely lost within quotes. I... am unfamiliar with him. >.> But it's a long ways away 2013 is, and that trailer teaser didn't quite get me excited. I guess this is likely because I'm not sure who he is.
[small]Feel free to now remind me ^^[/small]
He was the one who made the Hellboy movies and Pan's Labyrinth.

Oh, which certainly makes that teaser that much more interesting, thanks. :)

I'm not saying his story is bad, just that he is the "typical Rockstar fare" character - a troubled man who is trying to achieve a goal he deems important through being a pawn in everyone's court.

Frank Woods, on the other hand, is just another CoD hard guy, but, man, he is a very badass, emotional, likeable hard guy. He's the Soap McTavish of Black Ops - there are at least four instances of him being awesome.

I can't think of none myself for Marston. In fact, at one point, doesn't he, like, work for the Mexican Army against the rebels? Surely a great man.
My biggest gripe really is that this 'Woody' character has only been around for about a month and a half. So yes, I'm quite biased. >.>

Still, you're right. His moral stances are iffy, at best. Especially with the Mexicans. I wasn't too impressed when he stood around while those guys were hassling those women (and likely raping them).

Would you have personally chosen any of those nominees? Or, perhaps someone else not mentioned?
The best characters of the year, by far, are Ethan Mars and Norman Jayden, both from that one same game.

But, I'm totally, totally alright with Frank Woods, who I also liked.

I... still laugh during the scene near the beginning of Heavy Rain when Ethan is looking for his son in the mall. The way he yells out "JA-SON" is hilarious.

Even so, it was a great game. One which I should really get around to playing again for an alternate ending. For me, personally, I didn't quite connect as much as I did with Marston. Don't judge me. >.>

Bioware won Studio of the Year.
That trumps everything IMHO.
So, I'm happy with giving RDR that.

I don't know... I never found that scene that funny.

Ethan's voice actor can act really well and getting a child lost is scary as fuck. The facial animations were a little off, so it's definitely the most uncanny-valley scene in the game.

But, really, Heavy Rain's story and characters impressed me much more than any game this year. None of them were superhumans or improbably, and none of them were morally ambigious (well, yeah, almost none).

There were a few people over at the time, and they had decided to watch me play Heavy Rain. The immersion was ruined, and the Ja-son's were therefore funny and entertaining. Had they not been over, I suppose I would have been far more taken in by the scene. Another reason to play through at least once more I suppose.

I may not have been paying too much attention to most games this year, but aren't most characters for most games fairly morally good?

I'm so glad that RDR won, the one game this year that had such a good story and made me rather emotional at the ending.
I totally agree, been ages since i played a game that good that it actually made me care what happened to the main character.

well deserved win i think.

Well, not in games like these.

I bring up RDR again. I bring up any game with mercenaries by your side. I bring up any game where a person kills a ton of guys, yes it kind of good.

Heavy Rain has none of that. The people who you see aren't morally ambiguous, or really good/evil for that matter. They're just normal people.

*repeatedly smashes head against wall*

OMGWTF MASS EFFECT 2 DID NOT GET GOTY, THIS SITE IS TEH BIAS... AT LEAST RDR WON LOL, AM GLAD IT BEATED COD AND REACH!!!!!!!1111!!

OMGWTF SOMEBODY FROM BLOPS WON CHARACTER AWARD!!! WTF WHY NOT MON JHARSTON, THIS SITE IS TEH BIAS AND SELL-OUT

OK, now that the summary of the thread so far is out of the way... so what, people? You could always just put together your own GotY lists. These people have different opinions to you. There's not such thing as a game which factually "should" be GotY, it's all opinion. Every. Last. Drop of it.

I'm absolutely sure at least half the people hating on Blops and Reach haven't played either and are just hating on them due to their popularity. Which is a fucking infuriating attitude. When something's popular, it's usually because it's good. Look at Mass Effect 2, for an example many of you will actually agree with.

Now, of course I'm a little disappointed Mordin didn't win character of the year. Of course I'm a little disappointed Bungie didn't win the developer award. Of course I'm a little disappointed Reach didn't win best OST... but it's not as if it's the end of the world. There's no need for me to go and rant and rage because someone's opinion differs from my own.

The fanboyism in this thread is going a bit too far. As is the mainstream hating.

Honestly, I didn't think any games this year were worthy of a GOTY.
I agree. Even with games I really enjoyed there was always something that bugged me about the game, be it flaws or general bugs.

Oh well, I'm just glad Black Ops or Halo:Reach didn't get Game of the Year.

Cool, I had thought that cod would win this for sure. Good to see that Halo and cod lost and a good game won.
