Have you ever played through your entire backlog? If so, in what way did you go about it? I am trying to find a good way to go through my massive video game backlog that i will actually stick to.

Is that even possible? There are so many games that it's really hard to get done with the backlog. It's been a while since I finished a game.

Besides that there are epic games like Skyrim, Witcher 2 and Dark Souls that can take a lot of time, so it's becoming harder and harder to keep up with all the new releases. That's why I like some cool, short games like Stick of Truth or Transistor.

Yeah, it really is a challenge.

Back then, when I only had a couple of titles on a single console, I could simply take a break from my current run of a title and devote some time to the other titles so I could essentially finish them all around the same time.

Now, with 3 consoles and 3 handhelds and a dozen titles (which consist of sandbox action titles and RPGs), it seems like it could be a little tricky without buying new titles (which I still aim to do).

However, there are different ways to actually tackle your backlog without it feeling like a chore.

The first is to put your games in an order that you are comfortable in completing. You could choose to play the titles you are most interested first and move down the list. You could also choose to play one game per genre and not touch another until you've finished it. That way, you don't end up playing 3 RPGs at once, having your attention and interest dwindle over time. Concentration on a single system is also a good idea, as you can tackle titles that are usually not as time consuming as others found on different systems (handheld < console < PC).

For example, my current list of titles to tackle includes Donkey Kong and Shantae for the 3DS (virtual console), Crono Trigger for the DS, Persona 3 Portable for the PSP, Assassin's Creed 3 for the PS3, Odin Sphere for the PS2, and The Last Story for the Wii.

I will be focusing on completing Assassin's Creed 3 first (even though I don't want to), playing The Last Story every other day (as I need to familiarize myself with it again), and complete both Donkey Kong and Shantae as I'm close to doing so and do not take a lot of time to progress.

Once these titles are done, I can finish Persona 3 Portable, Crono Trigger, and Odin Sphere before moving on to other titles.

RPGs are the games I enjoy the most which makes playing through my backlog challenging since i want to play through them more than just once and try different paths. I think its a good idea CrimsonBlaze to mix in some other genres so I am actually making progression through my backlog.

I've never played through an entire backlog. I came in close with my PS2 collection (70 games) but I'm missing something like 10, and most of them are 100 hour plus RPGs. So no, in all probability I will never finish it.

I think the last time I was caught up with my backlog was 2005. Then I bought my Gamecube. I bought Skies of Arcadia later that year, and still haven't even opened it. And that was when I had a lot more free time.

'Course, it also doesn't help that I can't force myself to stick with a game for long. It either happens naturally, or I kind of fall off until much later (I also attribute that to the lower amount of free time). That's why it took me two years to finish a 25-hour visual novel (Da Capo), and why it's taken me about a year and a half to get 2/3 of the way through Assassin's Creed 2, even though I really like both games, and even though it took me only a month to finish, say...Katawa Shoujo and Assassin's Creed 1.

At one time I said I would beat EVERY game I owned.
Then I started collecting PS2 games for REALLY cheap.
500 games and counting, with the VAST majority never to be played.

My PS3 backlog got bigger because I finally got a PC that could run older games I missed.
So...yeah.

Only real 'guide' I have is just to have fun, and maybe multitask.

I tend to watch TV series while I game.

I'm about a quarter of the way through my Steam library and have decided to stop buying more games until I make a sizeable dent in my backlog. With exceptions made for decent Humble Bundles, I don't plan on buying anything soon which will help to stop the backlog getting bigger as I play longer games. Unfortunately I've got a fair amount of long games to get through. I'm also trying to finish games I've already started rather than firing up something new and forgetting about the older titles, but to stop myself getting too bored or frustrated I'll have two or three games going at the same time.

I dread the aftermath of an upcoming Steam summer sale if they do one. The savings...THE SAVINGS!

Never, ever, ever, will I, unless I win the lottery, get set for multiple lives, and spend all my free time doing nothing but.

I've forgotten more games I've wanted than I've ever played, and I've been gaming since the 80's.

I have an ever growing list thanks to limited income, limited time, and so forth.

Well the first step is to not get so many games that by the time you get though most of your backlog at that time you already have even more games in your backlog to get to, something a very large number of Steam users have trouble with. The next step is to choose one to four games(depending on the size and type of the games) and stick to those games until either you finish them or get bored and then move on to the next one. I also recommended switching between games, like playing one game for a few hours or for one day and the playing different game so that you don't end up getting sick of whatever game you're playing.

I recently cataloged all my games.... 726 across various platforms/generations/decades.

about 200 of them I have considered "finished"

probably another 80 or so titles on a wishlist I hope to play at some point too.

I think I have a problem :/

My biggest problem with getting through any of it though is a tendency to go back to an old game that I've enjoyed rather than booting up a new one

I've made it a bit of a summer project of mine to work through my various backlogs (video game, book, movie/TV, etc). basically I've made a list of items I want to get through and am steadily working through bits of some of them each night.

I love games (surprise!) but there's no way in hell I can get through my entire backlog. Something like 200+ PC games (steam and not steam) and a massive library of PS3 and 360 games. No, I just don't have the time to do it all. But variety is the spice of life.

Considering my back log is ever growing no, I am terrible for impulse buying and games are no exception. If I see a game for a platform I own for an attractive price I grab it, its got a bit stupid in many ways but its just how I am.

Nope, nor do I ever see myself doing so. Right now I have a backlog of roughly twenty five, not counting the massive amount of PC games I have behind. An even bigger problem is, about ten are visual novels. They can take anywhere from 30-50 hours on average. They take up a lot of time. The only way I could possibly clear my list, is if I quit both my job and school and spend all of my time for like six months gaming.

I have a lot of games and i keep buying new ones, but i don't view it as a problem. I just play whatever i feel like and then i might complete all of it some day or i might not, the most important part is that i get to play each game enough to know what i feel about it, since i don't really care about the story it isn't that important to actually clear the game in question. I just like to have a lot of variety and a lot of different things to choose from.

Peter is "me" and Jameson is my "reality check"...
Yep... Not even close... and it's still keeps growing if I keep buying every game that's being localized...

With that said, I still wish I had actual time to work on some of the more prominent ones in my backlog... But, sadly, I slowly starting to get a life... (Dammit...)
