Gaige from Borderlands 2. I could go around kicking ass all the time, with other Vault Hunters or just with my badass robot. If I die, I just pay a small fee to come back to life. If I get tired of fighting, I head back to Santuary and chill with everyone there. I see nothing wrong with this choice. Well, except maybe living on Pandora.
I agree with this. Lilith from BL1 would be a second choise though (don't like her in 2).

"The catch is that you have to take over a character and that character has to be the opposite gender of what you already are because reasons."

So you're telling me that I can be plugged into a game matrix style, but not only do I have to be put into an existing character (that I can buy, time constraints and all), but my mind is somehow incompatible with male character models despite the sheer cosmeticness of gender in a virtual world? That's an arbitrary limitation if ever I heard one, but whatever, I guess.

EDIT: Because I'm seeing this early it has to be an established character. i.e. No custom gender created characters like Skyrim but Fem shep from Mass Effect and the Pokemon trainers would count.
I'm not sure I see the qualitative difference there. What makes Shepard a valid option but disqualifies the Dragonborn? Off the top of my head the only significant difference there is that Shepard is definitively human whereas the Dragonborn can be one of 10[footnote]7 if you compress the Imperials, Nords and Redguard into a single race (Breton I'm content to leave alone due to its elven heritage), more if you include races added through modding[/footnote], but I'm not sure that's the rationale invoked. Would MMO characters like the Player Character in Guild Wars 2 be viable? World of Warcraft? Secret World? Mount and Blade? The Warden in Dragon Age: Origins? What is the actual nature of the limitation here? Is it about how much you can customize the character, whether or not they have a fixed major story arc, an established personality, voice acting...where's the line that's been drawn?

The female MC in Corruption of Champions... I mean, what could go more wrong right?

But seriously, either Samus Aran from Metroid Prime or Neptune (Purple Heart) from Hyperdimention Neptunia...

Probably Jeena from Spectrobes. I like her a lot, and I love the universe. It'd be fun to be part of the NPP, fighting the Krawl alongside one of my fave video game protagonists <3

I actually had to stop, and think, because no one guy really stands out to the point that I'd want to be him. I haven't played as a single guy that I wanted to -be-. Liked? Sure, but -be-? No.

After much thought, however, Garrus frikkin' Vakarian, but only in a Mass Effect where he hooks up with Tali, and they both survive in a "good" end.

Shep and the Pokemon trainers are more defined characters. Whereas the Dragonborn is more or less your custom MMO type character. So no the player characters in Guild Wars wouldn't be viable. And wow I think you took this a bit more seriously than I had hoped.

Is it cheating to choose a character you created in a game? If not, then my Trainer in Pokemon Y. Everyone seems to like her, her Pokemon love her, she has a great outfit and hair, and she recently became League Champion. She is also rich now!

If so, then Makoto from Street Fighter. Incredible speed and skill, and if I ever miss being treated like a guy, I can just put on a shirt and no one will be the wiser.
The Pokemon trainers aren't cheating. As they have actual canon names, a pretty definitive appearance, and actually are established/pre-existing characters to an extent.

Um...as the Guild Wars 2 characters are voiced in most of the major quests, it's pretty easy to argue that they're about as defined as Shepard is (arguably better defined, in fact, due to lack of player control in dialogue). (Also, since when do the pokemon trainers have defined characters? They're nearly blank slates in the games themselves).

What that? Nah. That's nothing. I just enjoy getting into the minutiae. That's me having fun with the question.

Then apparently I need to edit this again. You having fun with the question came off to me as very irritating and trying to make yourself look smarter than me since I apparently didn't think it as through as I thought I did. The line is drawn at characters with pre existing names, story arc, and essentially some kind of defined identity that the player ultimately has no control over. Which is why I said Shepherd is ok because he has a name associated with him/her, and the Pokemon trainers as well have their own established identity with actual canon names and appearances across various media. MMO type characters like those made in Skyrim, WoW, or Guild Wars don't count because they don't have a pre conceived identity attached to them other than what the player ultimately gives them.

What? It would certainly be an interesting life. I'd be constantly getting kidnapped, hilariously messing with my captor, and getting to do a lot of odd and fun activities during the normal day when I'm not in captivity.

FemShep, I suppose.

Hmm, but then I'd have to die at the end of ME3. Can I just call the indoctrination theory canon?

Yikes. My apologies. At worst, I meant it as a light hearted jab which I expected everyone to read, maybe chuckle at the jpg and forget about, honest. ._.'

...Well except for the question about what the limits were. That was legitimate, but that was really just me making sure I understood the scenario's rules well enough to act within its confines (One of the major things I was trying to figure out was whether my Sylvari was a viable choice[footnote]Which I now know it is not[/footnote], and if not then why (which I now know).

So then...answers, answers...I dunno, Yukiko or Naoto from Persona 4? Both have agreeable lives outside battle, though Yukiko would arguably be more fun in battle (Come on, I'd get to throw fire around!), but on the other hand there's something to be said about how fitting Naoto's shadow encounter is given the scenario.

A life of steak, mysterious adventures, steak, best friends, steak, kung fu, steak, a hot white haired husbando to fall head over heels for, and steak.

So how soon can I get mortally wounded?!

*reads previous response and regrets its tone* Sorry. Thanks for apologizing but I owe you one as well. I was probably a bit too aggressive with that so my bad. Seems like you can't make up your mind my friend since I apparently eliminated a choice or two for you. :) When in doubt Two-face it. (because saying "flip a coin" is so pre Dark Knight)......I'll stop my lame jokes now.

I'd go for the Daedric Prince Azura. Daedra don't have a set sex and they can appear like whatever they want but Azura always chooses to appear female. Besides, someone else already said Sheogorath and he's a Daedric Prince too. But yeah an immortal, shapeshifting god with total control over their own realm. Pretty sweet. Moonshadow is a really beautiful realm but I don't think anyone would mind if I added a futuristic city to it, my realm afterall.

Okay, so to save my life, my brain must be transplanted into a video game character, but of the opposite sex. That seems weird.

But, since I have a choice, I would go with the male protagonist from Saints Row 2. I only recently started playing Saints Row 2 at the end of last year, but I am having an absolute ball with it.

The twist is, my character should have a Latino accent. It's funnier that way.

Without putting too much thought into it: lulu from final fantasy x. It'd be such a beautiful world to live in (post - sin that is) and good god, the raw power that woman wields! Plus when my other options are yuna or rikku, I'd rather go with the choice that keeps me out of final fantasy x-2. (Zing!)

Welp, I think I'd go pokemon.

If I'm going to be stuck in a videogame for the rest of my life, I might as well live in one that's pretty idyllic and modern.

What happens if someone starts playing this game in the real world? Will I be a marionette or will I be able to ignore their instructions? or what if the game gets switched off or deleted will I come back when it gets switched on or reintstalled again?

If I have to pick then probally that girl from dishonered. she cant be killed.
Unless you have high chaos and you fail to pull her back up from the ledge
And she is heir to the throne so its not that bad.
Or of course the boss from Saints Row. simply go the doctor and I can choose to be man again.

Rubi Malone from WET.
I get to do everything male heroes do (Including drink whiskey and not give a fuck) plus killer slow motion duel targeting, beat up bad guys who look like Quentin Tarantino villains, and when I get REALLY mad, my entire world turns black and red like one of those Japanese samurai duel films.

Still one of my favorite characters of any gender...
