The way Tidus gripes about him, you'd think he was a complete monster, but he wasn't, not really. He was just a man who didn't really know how to talk to his kid. It's not evil or monstrous, lots of fathers face the same dilemma. Plus, he was a Blitzball star in his youth, and is generally really cut and awesome.
