Silent protagonists, it makes it feel more like you are actually playing the game rather than remote controlling some dude.
I agree, as long as the game is viewed from a first person perspective.

I also don't mind antiheroes. A good antihero can make an entire book.

Silent protagonists and space marines.

Oh, and the whole "nerd gets weapons or powers, beats shit up" cliche. Gordon Freeman, you make me proud.

I like a good bit of JRPG cliches such as floating continents, absurdly huge boss towers, and demonic evil lords or whatever being behind it all. A good bit of my appreciation comes from growing up with them.

Exploding barrels are a big favourite, I've seen them quite a lot.

exploding barrels, genetic experiments gone wrong, gibbing, and the shotgun that gibs everything in the room.why? you can put all those in one room and get a 4 star game ATLEAST!
I'm going to take a wild guess here...Resident Evil 4 and 5? Reminds me...they need to make a remake of RE 2, or take the next game back to its horror roots - without the annoying quirks of course.

The red one goes faster. The idea that a pallet swap makes enemies several times more tough is pretty funny. Also, in an RPG you can break into someone's home, riffle through their things and steal whatever you like and not only will they not notice, but they will endlessly parrot the same line over and over again like a crazy person. I'm the hero of the land dammit, I can do what I want!

JRPGs - The majority of them having somewhat "emo" characters. Though I would prefer not to refer to them as emo, because let's face it, a load of your friends die, you have to stop some evil guy from killing more, of course you're going to be in a bad mood, and "emo" is a bit derogatory.

Anywho on topic, I like the addition of these characters in JRPGs, and many other Japanese story based games. It makes a nice change from the overly cheerful protagonists many games have that are so very cringeworthy.

The silent protagonist, because I don't have to worry about any stupid quotes.
I'm with you. A silent protagonist, especially one that has no pre-determined character at all, is why GTA3 is my favorite game in that series and why I love Morrowind and Oblivion so damn much.

OH NO, The King/Duke/Marquis of (Insert Country/territory) has been killed/ kidnaped/killed by the next person in line (or killed by forces of evil). You and apparently like 2-11 other people can somehow defeat entire armies to se things right.
EVERY Fire Emblem Game uses this plot. along with several other RPG's.

Aliens attack earth, we counter and win. So many games made of that topic (I.E. Gears of War, Killzone, Halo, Resistance, etc.)

The character you're playing has some kind of super powers nobody else has.
For example: slooooooooooooowwww moooooooootiiiiiioooon.
