Hey everyone. I was just wondering how normal it is to fall in love with characters in video games. I am fairly certain that most of the world would see it as being incredibly sad and creepy, but i was just wondering what Escapists think. And i dont mean simply being attracted to them, i mean really really connecting with their character to a point when you feel actual love.

Do you have any video game crushes? Who and Why?

Mine is Sarah Sisulart from Lost Odyssey

Now, DO NOT take ofense to this.
It is okay to be atracted or even develope emotional ties, but to feel actual love is not very healthy.

True. I don't think it is a bad thing to enjoy the looks of a fictional character or even get get attached to them if the story is good enough to do that. Love is a bit too much.

I thought Sapphire in Unreal Tournament 2003 was quite attractive, on the box art at least. No love though.

I just think that video game crushes are a lot like celebrity crushes: You'll never actually meet them, so get over it.

I dont really mean love. Just an innocent crush, nothing creepy or obsessive. Not walking around thinking about them all the time, Im just wondering if any of you have met a video game character whose personality you really connected with

I don't get attracted to game characters because so few are actually compelling and attractive when it comes to personality. Every game has a buxom female that serves as little more than eye candy, even in this day and age (of course there are exceptions), but that's attraction to an image, not a person as an autonomous, self-contained being in space and time.

Im sixteen, and i understand that most girls in video games dont even have any notable personality traits, but like in good RPGs there usually is a higher level of characterization, as is the case with Sarah Sisulart.

This kind of remiinds me of that Japanese guy that wanted to be legally married to a anime character a little while ago. Considering the way most girls are in games, it's not uncommon to be attracted to them, but to actualy be in love with them is just a bit creepy and possibly unhealthy.

Im not sure how to feel about this. I once heard a kid say he was in love with Amy from the Sonic series. The followed that creepy statement with "my favorite game was Sonic hero's because you could see up her skirt when you used that super attack". Dont get me wrong there are atractive video game characters, but come on, that was needlessly creepy. There is a fine line here between acceptable and creepy, and i think you have to figure where to draw it yourself.

My opinion on this has pretty much already been stated. It's alright to find a fictional character attractive (that's what most of them are made to look like, after all). It's perfectly fine if get attached to them (i.e. it really hits you when something bad happens to them.) However, possessing strong feelings for a fictional character is a clear sign that you need some form of therapy, or at least a friend of the opposite gender.

As for the topic title, for my particular character that I've grown quite attached to, look no further than my avatar.

This is why i stay away from Japanese guys. Most of them are weird.
