Fallout 3...

But seriously, I quite enjoyed the ending of Arkham Asylum (after the rubbish boss fight). Linked what was a very enclosed game environment ito the wider world of Gotham City.

Crisis Core or Call Of Duty 4.
But I have to go with Metal Gear Solid 3 it had a brilliant ending which I love to this day.

God of War 2. Anyone who's seen it understands.

EDIT: the theme music, which you can't really hear in the link I posted, sets the whole thing off nicely: <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROWa2wxMChU&feature=related>

By "any of the MGS games" you mean "MGS3, and only MGS3, because actually all the others suck horribly"? No? Not even a bit?
...
Honestly, they do suck you know, in my humble absolutely right opinion.

Viewtiful Joe.

Made me smile, so it did.
How about the ending to Viewtiful Joe 2, where they promise a sequel they're never going to deliver? Turned my smile upside down.

But seriously, Final Fantasy Tactics and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter had great endings. Dragon Quarter's ending reminded me of that early George Lucas movie (back when the statement that Lucas an "artistic film maker" could be met with responses other than raucous laughter). I think the film is called "THXabillionnumbersinsertedhere." Anyhow, similar theme in both that movie and the game.

In every one of these threads i say the same thing. The Baldur's Gate Saga ending.
Without doubt! Bringing a character all the way from Candlekeep to the very end of Throne of Bhall remains one of the definitive 'gamer experience' which I insist everyone who enjoys rpg must do at least once. By the time the credits roll and the story is over, you feel like you've not just played a game, but really *experienced* something in the same way a good book does. Very few games I've ever played have done that!

On another note there was a cut ending from the original Kotor which I always thought was easily among the most touching and meaningful.

An ending where Revan realizes she simply cannot be saved and spends her last hours with Carth aboard the doomed Star Forge after having killed Bastilla to try and give the Republic a chance. I'm a sucker for those sort of noir endings.

Final Fantasy X:

"Yuna, I have to go"

The running dive off the ship, past Braska and Auron to high-five Jecht, it's amazing.

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core:

I never played FFVII so I didn't know this was coming, it made me real sad, Zack was so awesome.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy:

These guys all give a great parting message (except for Cloud, what a dick), I love Tidus's reenactment of the Airship Jump from FFX, "Gotta go, huh...", man that guy is so awesome. I just love this one, such a great game

The guys at Square Enix really know how to make a great game, these ending are so amazing, my words can't do them justice, so I'll just say FINAL FANTASY ROCKS!!

My favourite bits:
Not to mention that you realise the book that opens at the start of BG2 and the expansion will eventually become your bible of sorts, detailing your journey, YOUR experiences and results in your followers to be of your alignment and as they describe it "your name shall be a beacon of hope in times of darkness, tales of your life shall inspire and guide while servants of evil flee your wrath" (good ending). Most importantly, YOU have the choice to throw that away and remain who you are, with your companions actually giving you advice on what they would do, you romance options are of dynamic characters who actually may make you reconsider your choice.

Also, redeeming Saverok and developing Imoen to be a woman of confidence from the shy thief you fled Candlekeep with to the powerful Archmage, apprentice to Elminster and establishing her own thieves guild. That is the power choice and good characters can give you in an RPG.

Not to mention the music kicked ass :)
