Video game devs can't always get characters right, and in most games there's always at least ONE playable protagonist that we have a negative reaction to, ranging from disliking to outright hating them.

Here we share those hatreds. Or we don't and the thread slips into obscurity. Whatever.

I'll begin first and piss off 99.99% of the male population here with my 3 most disliked video game protagonists:

Lara Croft
Duke Nukem
Cloud Strife

John Marston.

He's just a huge asshole. He has no regard for anyone, constantly threatens people to get his way, and is just an asshole.

I mean yeah I guess he had a good reason, but still, he was an asshole.

S-Block from Tetris. Things were hard enough without that jerk always trying to ruin things

Despite it being my favourite, Final Fatasy 12 definitely had the worst main character. I didn't hate Vaan for anything other than how unnecessary he was to the plot.

I absolutely loathe Shion Uzuki. Just to give you an idea, one of the other playable characters is a 14 year old girl, in a JRPG no less, and I like her a whole lot more than I like Shion. There's an NPC who's a psychopathic child murderer and a traitor to boot, and I still like him more than I like Shion. There's a character that spends the entire series whining and being useless and I still like him more than I like Shion!

HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO PLAY. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR SHION AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT. FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.

But other than that, I really like the game.

Shion from Xenosaga, the sole reason I simply refuse to play any more of those games until I am informed she is brutally killed in one of them. I'm sorry, you can't have girl who is THAT airheaded and still try to tell me that she is some sort of super genius.
You think Tidus is whiny? At least he has a reason to be. Try a character who stops in the middle of running away from unstoppable murder aliens destroying the ship she is currently on, to bawl about a bunch of androids dying who are only dying in order to buy time for people like HER to get away, which she is no longer doing!

Edit: Ninja'd by hittite, who portrayed the feelings for her much better than I could.

Isaac Clarke, I just bought Dead Space, and the whole missing wife thing is pretty damn uninteresting when Isaac is a robot with advanced motor skills.

Q*Bert. Stupid name, stupid game, he's awkwardly phallic and inspired the name of the most irritating Futurama character, right above Hedonismbot.

He gets better in DS2, apparently. And I don't know, maybe it just depends on the person, cos I ended up identifying with him by the end. (Though to make motivation matters worse, it's not even his wife he's after. It's just his girlfriend... Yeah...)

He's not the main character, but I took an instant dislike to Jacob from Mass Effect 2. I think I finally kinda figured it out. It's the way he just assumes he has some sort of influence on whatever happens on the Normandy. He thinks that Commander Shepard, the guy who saved the galaxy from destruction by the Reapers gives a flying fuck what some random Cerberus operative with daddy issues thinks about releasing a tank-bred Krogan or how he feels about trusting a memeber of the team. I love watching him die only character in that game that I have absolutely no care for.

You identified with a mute who cuts up aliens with mining tools?
