Actually, there was a way to play as master hand. At least in melee anyway.

There was a video up on Gametrailers.com explaining it. It had something to do with the game reserving the third controller port and getting the game to *not* select a character. At which point it would load up master hand.

I'm having trouble finding it at the moment though. I'll get back to you.

Edit: I found it!

http://www.gametrailers.com/game/pop-fiction/13123 It's the third episode on the list.

It actually is possible to play as him. It's really complex and involves very precise placement of the cursor in the character select screen.

EDIT: NINJA'd DAMMIT!

I'm surprised that no one else mentioned this, but I spent FOREVER doing that one challenge in Super Smash Bros. Melee that if you beat it on the hardest difficulty would unlock Sonic as a character.

I'm still bitter about it.

I remember as a kid in Mario 64 almost everyone heard a rumor that if you shot yourself from the cannon at the castle at a certain spot you would find a secret night room.
Uh, actually that one's true. If you land on the highest part of the tower and jump at the wall a certain way you fall into a glitch area where the main doors should be.

Note I say glitch area. AKA you can't escape it and have to restart the console, making the area completely pointless.

OT: Mewtwo is in Pokemon Snap(not the sign, a real Mewtwo), and if you hit that Scyther a certain way he jumps out, kills 2 'Pikablus,' and eats them off his scything talons, and if you time infesting a Terran Command Center in Starcraft just right, you get an infected SCV, which could build infected versions of the entire Terran army.

All 3 of these came from 3 different friends. I'm not sure why I am/was friends with compulsive liers, but then again, the only friend I had that wasn't one busted my face open with a baseball bat...

GTA: SA is filled with rumors with everything from Big Foot to UFO's.

The Mods people create and the fact there is Alien 69 (which makes direct reference to "alien tech") hasn't helped.

I liked all of the ridiculously elaborate conspiracy theories in the original Pokemon games. My favorite was the secret of Bill's backyard: remember Bill, guy who lived in the two-tile-wide house at the very top of the map, north of the gym where you fight Misty (vermillion city?), which had a two-tile area of normal ground in the cliff that was blocked off by Bill's house? The rumour that I heard was that, if you beat the Elite Four ten times in a row using the same selection of pokemon (I think you might have not been allowed to use ones in particular slots, though I don't recall for sure) and without speaking to anyone or going to a pokemon centre, if you went immediately to Bill's house, there would be a new door in the back wall that would allow you to walk to the two-tile backyard, where one of the random encounters was Mew, who you could catch.

Obviously bullshit, though that isn't to say that I didn't try. The best part was that the ridiculous, convoluted process to find MissingNo and duplicate your items, which actually did work, made all of these theories credible.
