That probably has less to do with overall quality and more to do with the reductionist way that the videogame community in general treats "writing".
How's that?
Discussion of writing in videogames tends towards an extremely shallow approach. Whenever it's mentioned, it's almost always in the context of "Well, game A has better writing than game B", which is an effectively meaningless statement. There's rarely mention of underlying themes, tonal approaches, methods of characterization, types of symbolism, or really anything that expresses why you might enjoy the writing in a game on more than a binary level.

Occasionally you'll get somebody who gives a secondary superficial factor for what they consider good writing ("I like game C because it has Grey vs. Grey morality"), but that's where it stops. They don't explain why possession of this factor is beneficial for the story at hand; they just use it as a secondary qualifier for the binary "Good writing? [y/n]".

It takes one of the primary aspects of developing a game from an artistic standpoint and turns it into another way to proclaim why your favorite game is so obviously superior to everyone elses. It's reductionist.

Just my observations; please don't kill me.

I tend to find that if you're going to transform a more extended story offered by a game or even most novels, the miniseries or tv series tends to work as a better option to a straight up movie. Compressing all the information from a game into 2 hours or less is a bit too tough of a task for me to see becoming a successful film. If I had to see a game I like transformed into a movie, I think a relatively successful translation could be made, turning Bastion into a feature-length animation.

The Xenosaga series.
Seriously if they made a movie series of xenosaga that was done well, like a peter jackson film...

KOS-MOS and Shion would be some of the most iconic movie figures of the current age.
you beat me to it. either this or xenogears. if either of them were done properly, they could be pretty epic.

Heavy Rain was practically a movie, so it wouldn't be a huge jump. Subject matter would work well in Hollywood media.

I'd love to see Geist be made into a movie. Imagine the fun that could be had watching the ghost dude take over stuff and scare the crap out of people, and update it so when he took over people he gained the knowledge of fighting skills they had. Plus a kung-fu mouse fighting a dude so he could get taken over...could work.

Well, it'd be a hard thing to pull off, but well done would be cool, that or Infamous...only do it Clue style, where you randomly start with an ending, then at the point of no return, go back with a thing saying "this ALSO could have happened"...that'd be pretty nifty, or just make 2 movies, Infamous and Guardian, same plot, same actors, different choices changing the story, would be instant 2 movie ticket sales if liked first, and the one that was more popular could give out something cool either game wise or movie wise, like the last week of running that particular movie got an extra scene shown, or an exclusive trailer to some really kick ass movie coming out that just got announced or something

Dragon Age Origins, KOTOR and Tales of Symphonia are ones that immediately come to mind.

Though I think games lend themselves better to animated t.v series. In addition to those above I'd love to relive a Final Fantasy game through a full animated season. FF 5, 6 and 7 in particular.

Among the easiest to translate into movies would be any action style game. Uncharted, inFamous, Batman Arkham Asylum, Resident Evil 4, etc. I just don't think the experience would be enhanced by doing so with action titles though.

I'll tell ya, a shitty I, Robot PS2 game with decent controls would have been awesome. I know it's the opposite but still.

Team Fortress 2 might make a fun little short film if it isn't taken seriously (as in made funny, not that it doesn't get effort).

Left 4 Dead is linear enough to make a movie and the comics give it a connecting story.

Legend of Zelda could be fun if Link is kept mute.
