I kinda got this idea while watching the Mega Man fan film and feeling kinda bad for Dr. Wily at the end. Basically, are there any villains/antagonists in video games that you could sympathize with?

Hmm...the ones that come to mind are Richter from Tales of Symphonia and Baelheit from Baten Kaitos Origins.

Well, I tend to feel bad for any villain that's been mocked and picked on like Wily, especially when the heroes are just blandly heroic and kind of handsome alpha males.

Zeus from God of War...seriously, he was just trying to get Kratos to stop murdering things.

GLaDOS from Portal :( all she wanted to do was "Science" with the intention to make life better for those who were alive. And to make cake.

Alex from Golden Sun. I mean, he only wanted ultimate power, is that too much to ask for?
hehe, second golden-sun reference today ^^ i really want to play that game again, even though i've already completed both games 100% twice... i really want a 3rd one.

OT: Fire Emblem- Sacred stones. Lyon is a prince of a country that your country has been friends with for a long time. suddenly, that country invades without warning, leading you as a princess and the prince to fight lots of turn-based battles to find out why. turns out Lyon's dad died a long time ago, Lyon got distraught, thinking himself too young and pathetic to rule a country and hurridly researched dark magic to see if there was a cure for death. Sadly he found nothing other than lots of references saying "the dark demon crystal can cure death... but don't do it! the dark demon is too evil!"... the poor boy spends a long time debating whether to use this crystal, and when he does realises its only a shell of his dad and the demon is trying to take over him. he resists the demon's power as long as he can, but ends up totally destroying the country he wanted to save, losing his father and being killed by his 2 best friends (and one a heavily suggested love interest), The prince and Princess. And even then whenever he see's you both, he fights against the demon to regain his actual self, succeeding twice before his soul being fully devoured.

Another game character i feel sorry for is Specter from the Ape escape games. he was a monkey who everyone loved and adored, but then put on a hat which was designed to make monkeys talk (i think, i haven't played the game in a long time), this brought out his true intelligence and made him want monkeys to rule the world because they are better than humans. He spends all his time, travelling through time, changing history, collecting resources, building massive evil awesome weapons with said resources, only to get foiled by 10 year olds and their Mum's (or well, only in the 3rd installment).

then i remember that none of these video-game characters are real and all feelings for/against them leave.

The Origami Killer from Heavy Rain. Knowing why he did those things... it hurt.

Wallace Breen, of Half-Life 2 infamy. Everybody blames him for surrendering to the Combine, even though the alternative was total planetary extinction.

Also, I definitely remember giving this exact response just a couple weeks ago. Is this topic search bar-approved?

I agree. Breen was a fantastic villain because in reality he had very little power over anything and the Combine were just using him as a puppet.

Also, Darth Vader is one of the greatest villains of all time (he counts because there are Star Wars games) for about the same reasons.

No it didn't. His justification was nothing more than a flimsy rationalization. Considering just how difficult he makes it to save the victim and how far he is willing to go to get away with it you quickly realize that he really isn't doing it for the reasons he says.

It still is, but it goes a bit slower and humans are around to see it.

On-Topic: The space nazis in Killzone. While I don't remember the plot of the games that well, the first game had you fighting people searching for a planet of their own and the second game had something about the 'good guys' invading Helgan(home planet of the space nazis) to loot it's resources.
