If you look around on this website a fair chunk of the threads and posts are about gaming as "art". While I agree what when done very well games can be considered art, a couple people in this website seem to take the "games are art" thing a little too far and forget that games are...well games. Some people ask "are games really games" and some people say that games that don't seamlessly combine storytelling and gameplay aren't real games, heck one guy said that chainsaw lollypop shouldn't be released because it would destroy the progress that gaming had made. While I like a game that CAN do that, not all good games have too. Look at pong, it isn't symbolic of two eternal rivals bouncing back the orb of conflict with neither of them being allowed to rest until their foe is defeated, it's a dumbed down one on one version of soccer, with no story to be told of. Not all people play games for rich story, sometimes people play video games because they just want to kill simulated enemies.

Bottom line line, have we gone a little too far in trying to get games recognized as art?

I don't we as a community necessarily have, but some individuals take the whole thing too seriously.

Fappy said it all. First reply. Congratulations, I don't think anybody can reach that degree of awesomeness in this thread. You ruined it.

Yeah, what can I say - I agree with this. Some people really go too far. I don't see why games can't be both art and games. I mean, some of the great literature out there is even fun to read, so what the hell. And whether the games were games...ugh. Yeah.

Games are art. It's as simple as that. I mean, we can just state it and it's true. That's all the recognition they need to be art - us.

The sad fact is that there was a typo in my amazing post :(

Always thought Pong was supposed to be Tennis tbh

Anyway haven't you heard?Ever since ME3 was released games are officially art now(according to the gaming media at least)

Bottom line is I couldn't care less if games are ever considered art as long as they continue to be enjoyable

Actually I thought that was what you meant - you don't try so hard, we as a community did. Sure I was thrown off by the "necessary" but I haven't slept for 30+ hours now. I wasn't at my best when I read it. I have caffeine in my body now, though and I see my mistake.

I don't think most games are made with being art in mind. I do think that a lot of gamers try to shoehorn games into a broad definition of art.

I just see anything "pretty" as art >.> games are just artworks I can interact with and like art it's a matter of opinion. Don't see what the fuss is all about. Does being labeled art really make games any different?

General apathy makes this "heated debate" so much easier to deal with XD

Name something. Anything. Anything at all.

Whatever you think of, someone out there takes it way, waaaay too seriously.

Topic is dead on arrival.
Those who want to create games for the artistic merits will attempt to do so, and usually have the door slammed in their face because businesses won't fund it.

Stagnation and hyper-conservative business strategies, coupled with a shrinking mainstream market have forced most companies to taking a "sit and wait" approach for what Demand specifically wants so they can target it. (Kickstarter does exactly that)

And that's mere intentions; whether something is actually regarded as art (good or bad) is subject to its beholder. There are no "rules" or "Universal, objective definitions" that somehow magically exclude video games from being art.

Games are art, it has been recognised, arguing that something like Call of Duty means the medium isn't art just because it's shit is incorrect. So yeah, some people take it too far in that they don't seem to understand that you can, in fact, have bad art. It's still part of an art-form as a whole though.

SWToR was probably envisioned as a movie that would rival the earnings of James Cameron.

It's not really the problem of "are games art?" They all are just like music, books, paintings, etc. It's a problem of games being marginalized by the general public; that games shouldn't be held in as high a regard as other forms of art.

Fun.
Anyone who ever thought "No Items, Fox Only, Final Destination" was considered the "correct" way to play SSB.
