Out of curiousity, did anyone else watch it? It just seems to get worse year after year. The whole show was just one big commercialistic pop culture fest. Seriously, rappers and terrible emo bands? Something is really wrong if Todd Howard looks awkward and out of place at a video games show. And why did they give out so few awards in a normal format? Most of them were just announced in this quick stream at the end were they didn't even announce the nominees, a few exceptions being "Best Shooter", "Best RPG", "Best Music Game", and "Game of the Year". Why did "Best Music Game" get its own bit, while "Best PC Game", "Best Multiplayer Game", and "Best Wii Game" were all quickly spoken in one fast part at about the two-thirds point? Because Music Games are "cooler" and more marketable. So few people actually wanted to talk about video games, and they just had rushed acceptance speeches. We're losing our culture to...that.

Compare the broadcast schedule and line-up for the G4 and Spike TV channels. You'll find that they're strikingly similar. So similar, in fact, that you can often see the same show (Usually COPS) when you flip between them. Last I checked, G4 was televsision for gamers once upon a time.

The cultures have been about eye-to-eye a lot recently, especially with an MTV Games (Guitar Hero) bridging part of the gap between frat and gamers.

It's Spike. Noone cares about Spike to be honest. I only watch them because they show CSI: New York. And every so often they'll have a good movie.

I just watched the Brutal Legend trailer, and I have to say, it, and Jack Black's intro to it, was TOTALY FUCKING AWESOME!

Jack Black pretty much summed up how all the Escapist is feeling about Tim Schafer, and Brutal Legend.

Agreed. The only reason I usually see it is the "Bondathons" they occasionally have. That's about it. And the random flick.

Yeah, I miss TechTV (X-Play, Screensavers, etc.). G4, for me, was only interesting for Icons. It kinda had me w/ Code Monkeys but they kept switching the broadcast times. Arena was semi-interesting.

EDIT: More on topic, because I completely missed it before, I didn't like the Spike VGAs.

Jack Black did a great job in the intro to the show and the intro to the brutal legend trailer, other than that, it was a complete waste of time.

Keifer Sutherland showed up for like five minutes to accept his utterly contrived "Big Name in the Game" Award (????) It looked like a plea to get real-ass celebs at their show. Also he prolly left right after, ending his speech with "yall have a good night," ("im off to do something worthwhile, like punch a bartender in the face.")

Pretty shitty production, to be honest. Is it seriously THAT hard to put on a decent awards show?

Spike GOTY:

1. Grand Theft Auto IV
2. Gears of War 2
3. Gears of War 2
4. Gears of War 2
5. Gears of War 2

Seriously, can a network that's mandate is solely to appeal to men really objectively assess what the best games were any given year? Spike's historic preference for action game fare (and yeah, I know they gave an award to Boom Blox, but that's only because SSBB isn't a shooter with big guns and hulking muscles) is as shallow as the Women's Network claiming JoJo's Fashion Show was the best of '09. And it was good, but I digress.

GTAIV as GOTY was a little iffy for me. I dunno if I would have given the award to any of the games actually up for the award. Well, I guess I would have given it to Fallout 3 just because of that initial WOW factor it had on me.

I think the main reason to watch the game awards was for the sneak peaks at upcoming games like Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend. That kinda made it worth while for me.

O yeah, and FYI...BRUTAL LEGEND looks incredible. I loved Psychonauts and this game just seems like more awesomeness...

Worse than iffy, retarded. Fallout 3, Boom Blox, Braid, Sins of a Solar Empire, LittleBigPlanet were all better than GTA IV, and there's a handful of others too.

I believe that was back when it was Tech TV and Attack of The Show was still Screen Savers

Second. No game that has a number larger than 2 should be allowed to compete in that category imho. Unless there were DRASTIC improvements (Like Fallout going from turn based to First/Third person "real" time)
Agreed. Like noone's going to say OoT sucks, but more publications should've just given GTA III game of the year when it came out and have been done with it.
