Essentially this. I'd like to know exactly what being "desensitized to violence" has to do with helping someone who has just been stabbed. I mean, honestly, because violent images don't bother me, that immediately means I'm going to leave a man dying in the street?

The ignorance of the media is painful. Do people use the term "good Samaritan" while knowing jack about about the story itself? Did the priest and Levite leave the man to die because they played too much GTA?

Literally, painful.

CNN, epic fail. I would expect this from Fox, not from you. Who is this guy, who calls himself a psychologist but dismisses the bystander effect so readily?

This guy is either a ridiculously terrible psychologist, trying to drum up interest in his field of study (The effects of videogames/violence on the adolescent mind, I'm guessing), or actually conducting a study on our reactions. In order of appearance: Dumbass, Asshole, Troll

Umm... don't they need a little thing called... I don't know... EVIDENCE before they make any kind of statement on that guys motives? And why are they not commenting more on how the guy was LEFT ON THE STREET TO DIE FOR AN HOUR? Really... what has the news come to?

here is how the "bystander effect" works the group thinks that somebody else would get help this has NOTHING to do with games instead it has to do with human idiocy

CNN and fox need to be shut down. gaming has been a part of life for over thirty years, and anyway violence in any form of media is reiculous and impossible to take seriously.

beyond that, its more like that people are just assholes.

Its simple, people thought his health was going to regenerate.

This is a case of the bystander effect, where your chances of getting help increase as there are less people around to help you. Wearing a suit also helps.

all i can really say is
*facepalm*
well seeing as there was no blood visible(that i can see from the video) people could of thought he was a drunk. i saw at least 4 on my trip to New York.

also i say we should find a way too link all forms of violence to CNN, even if it is a completely ludicrous theory

I did some research on this a while back. Some video games can increase aggression, which may be linked to violence, however so do organized sports and other activities, so i'm giving a big whatever to the person making that claim. Apparently violence didn't happen 30 years ago before video games existed, the world must have been a safer place. :p

Something similar happened quite a few years ago to a woman, though I can't for the life of me remember the details.

Either way, the apathetic nature of society has little to no relation to video games, it's just something to blame.

People are assholes. A dieing guy is next to them and they do nothing. Also, the only case where you can do nothing to help someone that is dieing is in Left 4 Dead. If there is another game please tell me.

Video Games? Really? Do some ground-research please. Very few games lets you watch someone on the floor obviously dieing and let you do nothing.
In No Russian you actually get to shoot them!

OT: But really, the media really has to stop blaming video games on everything.

Ugh, gamers are so fucking defensive. Here, we are given two news items:

1. A good samaritan lay in the street bleeding to death while 20 people totally ignored him, and he died.

2. A news network tried to get ratings by blaming videogames (indirectly, and among other things) for ratings.

And the title of the thread is "Video-games take another "beating". Right. Because that's the real news here.
Welcome to the Escapist. Where any negativity must be at least 6 sentences away from the word VIDEO GAME otherwise it is a blatant attack on gamers. You should have been here when Obama said kids should go outside and read and not play games all day. You would think he called for censorship or something.

Well the whole story is quite horrible, but yes when poeple paint video games and gamers as the scapegoats for every crime imaginable its insults us and makes us overly defensive. Violence has been around since life began and believe it or not its actually getting better (as in there is less of it) , people thousand or two thousand years ago considered ritualistic human sacrifice a common thing. A man's life at certain situation cost less than that of a bull, slavery was a norm, should i mention gladiators who were killed for the sole amusement of the public? Its not untill a couple centuries ago that big changes started happening , and when such despicable act takes place it isnt the norm or noone would find it shocking. The way i see it video games help relieve stress and aggression a person accumulates during the day ,not building it up, i'm fairly certain that without a dose of Doom and GTA in my life i would go batshit crazy and go on a killing spree IRL ,thankfully to the wonders of technology i can instead kill a bunch of pixels.

Hamsters and Rangers everywhere rejoice!

Look up "bystander effect". I remember reading a story in psych class about a woman being raped and eventually stabbed to death in the middle of a busy sidewalk and nobody stopped to help her or even call the police. Crazy, huh? But yeah, I have no idea how video games could possibly tie into this particular story... lazy journalism?

That damn rock n roll...
I mean, violent movies...
I mean, backmasked heavy metal....

Wait, which one was the current scapegoat? Oh, video games. They must be the problem with society, amirite? Couldn't be human nature or anything like that.

"I don't wanna get involved, it's too much paperwork."

Clearly this is the fault of video games, amirite?

Hell, if you ask me, you could play it the other way: The guy only tried to help because of video games! He must have played a lot of Spiderman 2!
