This thread is for games that you thought you were going to hate , but surprisingly you enjoyed.

For me it was Alpha protocol , i usually hate anthing that is 3rd person shooter or stealthy-ish , like mass effect , resident evil 5 ( i liked RE4 though ) , gears of war , splintercell , syphon filter , etc... I bought alpha protocol for 9 dollars new at best buy , it was most likely a error on their part because now its up to $30 . Anyways , when i played it i found it to be pretty fun , and i REALLY liked the main character , and the skills and whatnot. Anyways , all this to say is that Alpha protocol took me by surprise and i really enjoyed the game even though before playing it i thought it was going to suck.

Rise of the Argonauts.

If you haven't heard of it, you are most assuredly not alone. I got it on a whim from Gamefly because I was feeling kind of froggy for a Greek mythology romp that didn't have Kratos roaring about his angst for six or seven hours. Little did I know that I was stepping into a rich, beautifully rendered world with moral choices, an interesting upgrade system, and beautifully written and voiced dialogue that feels epic enough to dovetail nicely with the mythic subject matter without crossing into ham and cheese territory. It was one of the best little one-off games that I've ever had the pleasure of picking up...never felt like drudgery like so many beat-em-ups do.

I'd highly recommend dropping a few hours on this one.

*looks at games in collection* .. ok here goes

Duke Nukem forever... oh no wait.. that was an unpleasant surprise.

Ahum..

Nier on the 360:
Still playing it but it plays surprisingly well. Fast gameplay, great controls, engaging story.
I wonder why I didn't play this before.

W40K: Dawn of war series
I never was attracted to RTS games. I like C&C and Red Alert but I sucked at it harder than a vacuum. But DoW was truly fun and addictive.

And that's about it. Usually I have a pretty good idea going into the game what to expect.
I have more titles that surprised me in a bad way (like DNF).

The cell shaded Prince of Persia.

I loved the Sands of Time trilogy, which it paled in comparison, the game was replete with baffling choices in game design; everything seemed like I should hate the game. And yet I didn't. I actually really quite liked it.

Why's this surprising? That's a great game and I've never met anyone who doesn't say so. (genuine question, not snarky correction)

I was surprised I liked Metroid Prime as well, because it was the first (and maybe the only?) First-Person Adventure game I had ever played. When it was announced, I was afraid of change. All Metroid games I had played were side-scrollers! I was like "oh god they're turning metroid into an FPS wtf nooooo I want to explore and discover and think and solve puzzles, not deathmatch! I have Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 for those!"

I was pleasantly surprised at how amazing it was, but what can I say? Metroidvania works first-person in 3D. I'm glad.

Anyway, I was surprised I enjoyed Katamari Damacy. I mean, if you've played it, you'll understand why, but if you haven't, it's hard to see the appeal.

For me, Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3.

I'm not really all that big into anime... I loved Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon, but I've never really been all that interested in much else. So I was originally content to let that game pass under my radar.

But one of my university roommates told me I had to play it since I generally enjoy tactical squad-based games and strategy games. I didn't really have anything new to play at the time, and I was trying to put off writing a couple papers, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt and played it.

I was indeed pleasantly surprised.

Not enough to go out and buy a PSP to play the other one, or watch the animated series... but I still had a lot of fun with the game.

God of War. I usually HATE games that make a spectacle of killing people like this...but honestly, I loved this game despite the queasy feeling in my stomach.

Knights of the Old Republic. FLAME ON! No really when I first played it I was expecting Mass Effect times Star Wars but the click to attack style gameplay put me off. At least until my PC decided to kill itself and I had to go back to using my old one which wasn't powerful enough to play any of the games I play now. So I gave KOTOR another chance and ended up loving it.

Prototype. I'm usually VERY put off by blood, but...For some reason, it kinda looped around and ended up not affecting me in that.

Not near my collection so...

Godfather 2. It was fun, the business mechanic kept me going and using your foot soldiers to take business adds length to the game. The audio was REALLY good too. The shooting noices were the best I've ever heard

Mass Effect; I usually hate sci-fi and I'm a massive fan of medieval fantasy. I thought I'd try it because I liked Dragon Age, but I wasn't really expecting to enjoy it, but enjoy it I did!

Trauma Center

So odd it went right back to awesome. And I'm not even mentioning that bomb mission.

Portal - I was prepared to hate it solely because of the obnoxious fanbase, but I surprisingly came to enjoy the game.

FFXII - First Final Fantasy I ever liked. Started playing it more on a whim, and wasn't expecting much because with the exception of XIII, it's probably the most hated FF. It was honestly very good.

Uncharted - Played it back in weeee 2007 (can't believe it's been four years). My sister bought it and I made fun of her for picking up that "Indiana Jones wannabe" game. By the end of the day, I was begging her to let me play. It's now my favorite new-gen series. Never looked back, mon.

Thank you. I love FF12, and I also love the other FF's (save for 13, it wasn't terrible, but definitely not the best in the series). But just because of how different it was, everyone was all "It's different, now it sucks". Sure, it had some issues, but which game doesn't. But the few it had were blown out of proportion and so many never gave it a chance.

Knights of the Old Republic II. It really got alot of hate, and when I played it ended up liking it just as much as the first one. There was some significantly better writing in the game, and Kreia was a great character.
