My dad, watching me tear through zombies with a machete in Left 4 Dead 2.

"Don't you think this desensitizes you to violence?"
Me, sarcastically: "Yup, this is completely desensitizing me to grey pixels becoming red pixels"
"No, really. This is teaching you terrible lessons about how to relate to people. It's telling you to solve problems with violence."
Me: "The problem I'm solving requires self-defence."
"Killing indiscriminately is self-defense?"
Me: "I'm not killing indiscriminately! Look, I'm not killing Nick, or Rochelle, or Ellis, or that Witch..."
"But you are killing all of the zombies."
Me: "Killing a zombie is inherently an act of self-defense, as all zombies by definition are soulless killing machines."
"Couldn't a game teach you the same lesson about, for example, Muslims?"

At this point I was literally speechless, dumbstruck, and other words that also mean "unable to speak because that argument was so poor". How could a game like that get past the ESRB, let alone Faux News and CNN?

TL;DR: My dad said that video games might teach me the terrible lesson that killing a Muslim is inherently an act of self-defense, as all Muslims by definition are soulless killing machines.
It seems to me that your dad was trying to say that if the game was teaching you that zombies are soulless killing machines worthy of death then you could use games to teach a person that Muslims were soulless killing machines worthy of death. This just seems that your dad doesn't have a lot of information about zombies. You'd have to just note to him that the definition of zombies have been defined outside this game so the game is just using this. Knowing outside the game that Muslims aren't killing machines worthy of death means a game based on that wouldn't be effective. I am sure your dad is a smart guy. You seem intelligent and intellect is mainly genetically based. Give him the benefit of the doubt. He does have a point that games could be used for propaganda. He is just trying to look out for your well being. Just assure him that you engage your mind when playing game and wouldn't play a game that was an obvious propaganda piece. There is the valid point that a game could manipulate a person's view of things. This is why we don't let children play certain games. Your dad is just trying to do his best to look out for you and it is hard for parents to stop thinking of their children as young impressionable kids. Just show him that you are a mature adult and he doesn't need to worry.

The best way to dispel myths about our hobby like this is to respectfully engage those people and show them that their conceptions are wrong. Parents are just trying to look out for their children. My dad let me start playing more violent games when I showed the ability to place the violence in context and engage in a mature discussion about violence. He usually made sure to check out the game first before letting us play it. He was just looking out for us. Currently my little bro isn't allowed to play some games I think he should be able to, but I think this is just because my dad still sees him as a little kid.

That Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is an awesome, groundbreaking RPG that deserves to be hailed as a hallmark for the genre.

My dad saw me destroying zombies in Left 4 Dead...

Dad: What's going on?

Me: Killing zombies. (At this point I was useing the M16)

Dad: You know, why can't you just hide?

Me: Becuase the AI is an evil bastard and wants to cause me nothing but misery.

*Tank shows up*

Dad: Whelp, looks like you're fucked...

*Kills tank*

Dad: This game is so unrealistic...

Me: Gee, ya think?

I was once told that playing video games would lower my grades. I then intentionally played more video games, yet my grades increased. Coincidence, no. I just worked harder on assignments, just for the sheer satisfaction of it. My point is, just playing video games will not hurt your grades. At least, it didn't hurt mine.

Someone told me that Twilight Princess was good; and if that isn't a myth, I don't know what is.

Seriously.

Oh, and my dad once said that HALO could kick Half-life's ass. He sang a different song when he got The Orange Box for his birthday.

The cake is a lie.

It is obviously not a lie. If you beat the game, you see the cake waiting in the basement.
You know, that place this forums' elite tell you to stay away from and fear, the basement.

Other myths:

My cousin once told me that once there was an extreme PS2 addict (This was when the PS2 was new). One day while he was playing, his home was lit on fire and he and his home burned to ashes. His PS2 was the only thing that wasn't destroyed or burned. I believed this for a month before playing Ratchet and Clank (I think).

Anybody who says that video games cause violence needs a swift slap to the face so he can drop back into the world of the perfectly normal and sane. Saying that pressing a button to kill somebody can relate to pulling a trigger in real life is bull. Also, saying that games "train" people to kill is ridiculous, especially if the person was killing via a rifle. Games cannot train you to become a marksman, let alone a sniper.
