(First off, spoiler warning - chances are pretty much everything with a villain in it will be spoiled in this thread, assuming it takes off)

For christmas, I got Bayonetta. Today, I finished it. It was a very good game in many ways, I thought - great fun to play, excellent graphics, amusing/awesome soundtrack and a very, very sexy lead woman - but what most surprised me was the villain, Father Balder. There are lots of villains who impress me (like the Prophet of Truth) and a few who are just a pleasure to watch (like Heath Ledger's Joker) but the last time I have hated a villain this much was in Game of Thrones. That guy was the smuggest douchebag in the world, constantly spouting these pretentious ten-dollar words and riddles, and for a goodly while it appeared as if he'd cruelly killed one of the game's most endearing side-characters. Then, in your fight, he kills a couple of the cool demon beasts you summon to fight him without even breaking his smug smile (seriously, I liked those things! They were badass!) and finally, in the middle of the heartwarming cutscene after the battle, he comes back to life and ruins it in the cruellest and most manipulative way possible, still smugly smiling.

So, my point is: What villains in media really (preferably, unexpectedly) succeeded in making you hate them with the burning fury of a thousand suns?

If by 'sucessfully' you mean that they were genuinely hateful people, not just that they were a frustrating story obstacle *coughKaiLengcough*, then the first that springs to mind is Joffrey Baratheon.

He is pure, unadulterated evil, but he also manages to be this without being unbelievably over-the-top, which would cease to make him threatening. You can genuinely believe that, if a boy who already has a tendency towards cruelty (I'm sure we've all had the misfortune of having to be around the sort of child that actually enjoys pulling the wings off flies when we were children ourselves) grows up surrounded by royal entitlement, you'd get Joffrey Baratheon as a result.

EDIT: Oi! I'm supposed to be the Ninja here!

You know, for someone who warned about spoilers, you don't seem to make much use of the spoiler tag, especially for something as long form as Game of Thrones.

(I haven't read/watched it by the way, so those who contribute GoT stuff, please mark spoilers.)

OT:

This sounds dumb, but a couple of the villains in MLP: FiM actually do a very good job of making you hate them. Discord, spirit of chaos gets a special mention since he's the antithesis of most if not all of my personal philosophy.

In things not for little girls, Kessler from Infamous was great. I mean, we're talking about the kind of person who

kills the love of his life and makes the life of his younger self a living hell of bad publicity, isolation, and violence in order to harden his younger self into the kind of hero who won't be tied down by emotions when he needs to save the world

He is the hardest of core.

Mimicking people who say Joffery here.
Handsome Jack stops being funny and turns into a right **** at about half way through Borderlands 2 as well.

The Thalmor in Skyrim. My Argonian would go out of his way the slit the throat of every Thalmor patrol he came across. Nasty Elvses.

That guy Lord Walder Frey

I knew people were gonna say Joffrey, but let me say it too. This ************ right here.

I can't believe what an amazing job the actor and the writers are doing. I have never hated a fictional character more.

I haven't seen Game of Thrones yet (don't kill me), so I'll go with the Law from VGHS.

What's funny is that I use him and the actor who played him (Brian Firenzi) for a lot of my avatars.

The funny thing is...he gets rescued by Batman in Batman Begins. Every time I see him in that movie, I say "DON'T SAVE HIM! HE'LL BE AN ASSHOLE IN GAME OF THRONES"!

Then again, almost every Lannister in Game of thrones are the worst...

A Hermit's Cave
Recently? Scythe Master from Requiem for the Phantom, though it was also just as much a case of yelling at all the other characters to 'KILL THAT MF'er!!' as hating him enough to wish a long and painful death on him. Getting shot in the head doesn't quite cut it... -_-

Excluding Joffrey Lanister (he got plenty of hates) there are two characters that come to mind-

Spandam from One Piece
He was the cause for runining Franky life by framing his invention on the attack on that ship. Also not only did he cause Franky to suffer, he was cruel and malice toward Nico Robin, one of my favourite character. Spandam himself is such a spinless git who is just pathetic in general (like his clumsiness and was weakest of all of CP9) and yet he hold some powers to be a threat.

Nina Trinity from Gundam 00
While she abit similar to Spandam for being the blame for a character to suffer but there is a difference. Spandam had reasons to do so toward Franky but for Nina, she did it on a whim (you know what I mean if you watched the series). I just hate her for being so careless/ wasteful with her decision as being a good villain is to put some effect into their action. I mean she acted evil for not knowing it in the first place! Needless to say I didn't for the tragic to follow her brothers and herself later on.

Udey Hussein in the Devil's Double. I know the movie is based on a book of dubious credibility (to some people at least) but I thought Dominic Cooper did a great job of portraying Udey as a pretty reprehensible man.

I wouldn't say that I hated him, but by the end of The Departed you get a great sense of how much of a **** Matt Damon's character really is. Whilst the main villain is played by Jack Nicholson and is therefore impossible to hate, Damon is a slimy little prick.

Bioshock spoilers:

That ************, Fontaine.

When I first played Bioshock, I'll admit, I had a small, sneaking suspicion in the back of my mind at the beginning of the game that Atlus wasn't everything he seemed. Something seemed... off, even if I couldn't put my finger on it.

But then there was the moment when his "family" was killed right in front of your eyes. I was genuinely moved, and I was all ready and raring to go kill Ryan for killing a man's family in cold blood like that. And I actually kinda LIKED Ryan. And with that, I had completely forgotten my suspicion of Atlus, and went along blindly.

And then the truth came out. He had been manipulating me, on several levels, the entire time. I was LIVID. That final boss battle was oh-so sweet.

Really, I think that this is why Bioshock is my favorite game ever. Because it successfully evoked so many emotions from me.

Such a smug bastard, manipulating everyone as he sees fit, was so satisfying to watch Kain dish out a beat down on him.

Jennifer Schecter from the L Word. Not really a "villain" in the traditional sense, but boy, do you hate her by the end. Heinous *****.

The Celestial Dragons from One Piece.

A group of humans who are completely above the law due to being descendants of the founders of the World Government.

And they directly abuse and are the cause of the abuse of powers on a level that would make living under the Nazis seem preferable.

Luca Blight from Suikoden to was awesome. Killing Children to start a false war, making people snuffle on the floor like a pig and then killing them for the laughs, standing atop a big pile of bodies. he had it all

Good old Luca Blight, he didnt like anybody!
