Galbatorix from Eragon.
Dude is hardly ever mentioned, we never actually SEE him doing anything evil. How do I know he did everything he's rumored to do? Maybe it's all just dragon rider propaganda.

Maybe he has a renegade general on the loose and that's why his minions are slaughtering villages.

(Apparently he does something evil in the final book, which I haven't read, but could probably chalk up to a nervous breakdown due to the heroes bugging him so much).

Haven't you heard the dudes backstory? His Dragon was killed and so he went on to corrupt another dragon into serving him, he then proceeded to corrupt 13 other riders into evil magic, kills his various teachers, takes over Alagaesia, rules with an iron fist.

The funny thing is those henchmen are actually the evil dudes you feel bad for, the ones serving Durza were corrupted as well

Samuel/Lucifer. Seriously the guy was Gods number one guy, did what God asked and yet was a slave to Gods commands. Then God makes humanity, and gives us free will and expects Lucifer to bow down to us too. I don't think it was unreasonable that Lucifer was mad about being a slave while humanity was given free will for free.

sarrus (i think that was his name) and to a lesser extent T.I.M from mass effect, they both were just trying to do what they thought was best for the universe but were corrupted along the way

I'm surprised no one mentioned Cameron's Avatar yet.

I felt kind of bad for the humans towards the final fight sequence.

While not an individual villain exactly, I had a lot of sympathy for the Enclave in Fallout. Sure, they were conducting evil experiments and were kind of dicks, but they seemed like the only faction that were still really pushing forward in terms of science and tech, they had helicopters!

You've forgotten a certain hedonistic murdering cannibalistic psychopathic mad scientist who who does a little anal spooning with his recently created mentally handicapped frankenstein.

Griffith from Berserk. Yes, he was a complete maniac, but his entire world came crashing to the ground. I am not sure I would be too terribly sane either.

On a completely different note, I fealt sorry for Fuma's character from X. He was the villain, for no other reason then that he was supposed to be.

Oh yes totally this, I felt sooo sorry for the guy at the end of Deathproof.

I don't really have an original thought for this thread, I'm practically always rooting for the bad guy and honestly love nothing more than an anti-hero. Like Riddick in Pitch Black, dude's a total ass, but with a heart. OH! that bounty hunter cop guy in that movie, I really liked him, so let's have that be my answer to OP.

Alduin.... Dude was just doing what he does, the some upstart mortal kills his friends, follows him back to his house, forms a posse then beat the poor guy up. In my case, by jumping on his head and repeatedly stabbing him in the eye.

Space Pirates from Metroid, to me they always looked a bit helpless compared to suit that Samus wears.

I also have an over-the-top theory (not to be taken seriously) that Samus is in fact a racist motivated by her parents deaths to kill all the Space Pirates.

Spoilers for Ghost Trick

You are meant to sympathize with Yomiel near the end, but I still take issue with the fact that the ending reveals that he killed Camilla in one of the previous timelines, it seems out of character for him.

This. He was at the top of the world, he had nearly won, and it was taken all away from him. It begs the question, how many people would you sacrifice to be reborn?

It's more absurd when you get people who think that the Na'vi were any different from the humans.

I remember watching a movie called "What About Bob?", where Bill Murray plays a neurotic mental patient who ends up stalking his therapist and ruining his life. And you were supposed to sympathize with Murray's character.

It was one of those horrible sadist movies that I hate more than anything else, where the entire premise is one guy being horribly, horrifically punished for an hour-and-a-half, and which never work because no matter how much of a jerk the character in question is there will always be a point where I no longer feel he deserves it.

For example, in the movie the therapist is portrayed as being a somewhat stuck-up person who doesn't spend enough time with his kids. And for that the film believes that it's justified for Bill Murray to get his children to hate his guts, turn everyone he knows against him, ruin his career, cause him to lose all of his money, blow up his house, and then marry his sister. I was disgusted watching it, and was rooting for the supposed "bad guy" to get some sort of reprieve the whole time, but it never came.
This. So much this. It's like the movie Dinner For Shmucks. It's painful to watch this guys life crumble around him, especially when circumstances are kind of forcing him to be a dick.

Captcha: "In Stitches"
...that's kinda creepy. I think the Escapist uses people to power their captchas, like in deus ex: HR

Brauner from Portrait of Ruin. Just seeing how much he breaks down after you fight him made me feel REALLY sorry for him, but then all of a sudden, seconds later, he gets BRUTALLY obliterated by Death.

He wasn't evil, he just didn't like Tom Cruise's womanly hairstyle:

It's all explained in the directors commentary, I swear
