Actress Anne Hathaway will play Selina Kyle and her alter-ego Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's third Batman film

The 28-year-old, who will co-host the Oscars next month, follows in the footsteps of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry in playing the role.

British actor Tom Hardy, who appeared in Nolan's film Inception, will play villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

Christian Bale returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman in the film, due for release on 20 July 2012.

In a statement, Nolan said Hathaway would be "a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story".

Hardy, he went on, would "bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman's most formidable enemies".

The Dark Knight Rises follows 2005's Batman Begins and 2008's The Dark Knight, for which the late Heath Ledger received a posthumous Oscar for best supporting actor.

Hathaway, Oscar-nominated in 2009 for Rachel Getting Married, will return to the Academy Awards on 27 February to co-host with James Franco.

so who is going to play the joker now? the character is still alive at the end of the movie. it would be weird if the joker just ceased to exist wouldn't it? do you think batmans most formidable villian will be in the movie at all? because god knows nobody is going to play that roll like Heath nailed it.

All batman villains live. He never kills them. Perhaps the Joker is just plotting his next move or something? They don't "need" to have him in the movie.

I can't think of Tom Hardy as Bane. I've only seen him in Inception though, so perhaps he can make do with a beefier look.

Search Bronson. I imagine it will be kind of similar to that.

So is Hugo Strange not in it? That's a shame - that would have been crazy psychological.

I should imagine they'll find some way to explain it. Perhaps kill off the Dark Knight Joker and introduce a copycat sometime. Either that or he'll just get a nod in the next movie and nothing else.

And this sounds awesome. I hope we get to see Bruce Wayne with a broken back! BAAAAAAANE!

Well, 1 out of 2 isnt bad personally. Part of me wanted to see Bane from the Knightfall story arc. which as mentioned makes sense given the title, as Im guessing it will be Bane breaking Batman fairly early on, and then Batman building back up.

Honestly, Catwoman doesnt impress me. Even if it is Anne Hathaway. The char is beyond bad and really no good way of doing it right. Guess we will have to wait and see.

I still would have rather had Riddler in a more muted role and the focus being on Hush, but eh, just a personal pref. Im sure Nolan will finish out decently.

I propose a better idea would be to not try to recapture Ledger's portrayal at all. He was a great Joker, but anyone trying to do something similar just wouldn't hold up to the original. We're not entirely sure how long it has been since the events of the Dark Knight, so it's entirely possible that the Joker has changed greatly in either appearance or mannerism.

Read this on comicvine earlier, it's actually pretty good news. Bane is a conceivable villain in Nolan's realistic-ish universe.

This is most likely. The purpose of my post was simply to say that they'll find a way to explain it. Not sure how but they will have to really...

I wish they had Harley Quinn in this one, but I'm sure this'll be great anyway.
Interesting choice, Anne

I remember reading an article saying that if Catwoman would be in the movie then there would be a lot of jokes about the title. ... Still looking forward to it.

I wouldnt say that. If you look at the pre 40s batman, he did kill.

More recently, from Final Crisis, he basically Killed Darkseid.

And I dont know how cannonical it is, but it is implied in the Batman Beyond Series that he eventually is partially responsible for the Jokers death. (edit: Sorry, my bad, Its Tim Drake who kills the Joker, but Batman was present and basically allowed it to happen after what the Joker did to Tim.)

Well, I don't think they'll have much trouble reintroducing him, since the fate of Joker in TDK was vague enough as it is, so something like showing the Joker breaking out of Arkham Asylum isn't out of the question. I doubt he'll appear or do anything of significance in this movie though.

Joker was put in jail and there really is no need to bring him on the screen in the last movie, it would probably only ruin the feel of it because we would want more of him as opposed to the main villains.

Yes, theres really not alot of need to pull out the Joker for this film. I think there was some speculation that there would be minor cameos of the Joker in the film. Hypothetically it could be done very easily with remaining footage from TDK, and if that was used it would likely be in flashbacks and such.

I mean if you absolutely had to use the Joker in the next film, I think the only person who would be accepted by the fans after Ledgers performance, would be Hamil, and thats not going to happen as Hamil is absolutely sick of the Joker.

You should watch Bronson.

Tom Hardy is such a joy to watch in that movie, he's like a balder, beefier version of Alex from Clockwork Orange. I also watched him do a fantastic performance as Bill Sikes in Oliver Twist.

He gives these wondefully intense, screaming performances when put in the right role, and the character of Bane seems right up his alley.
