Actress Anne Hathaway will play Selina Kyle and her alter-ego Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's third Batman film

The 28-year-old, who will co-host the Oscars next month, follows in the footsteps of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry in playing the role.

British actor Tom Hardy, who appeared in Nolan's film Inception, will play villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

Christian Bale returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman in the film, due for release on 20 July 2012.

In a statement, Nolan said Hathaway would be "a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story".

Hardy, he went on, would "bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman's most formidable enemies".

The Dark Knight Rises follows 2005's Batman Begins and 2008's The Dark Knight, for which the late Heath Ledger received a posthumous Oscar for best supporting actor.

Hathaway, Oscar-nominated in 2009 for Rachel Getting Married, will return to the Academy Awards on 27 February to co-host with James Franco.

Thoughts?

Other than Anna Hathaway in a catsuit that is.
So... wait, Bane's the new villain in the film?
He's not smart enough to go against Batman by himself. If they don't have a main "brains" villain to go along with Bane and provide the intelligence of the film, this is not going to be good..

I'm liking the sound of this, Hathaway in a cat suit, can't wait.

That said, Bane? I mean I know he's one of the ones that you can more easily make into a real villain (just make him a buff masked guy with steroid abuse problems) but still he never seemed all that interesting to me. Plus, he will always carry the stigma of being involved with that terrible Batman and Robin movie.

That said, cool, they've found their villains. Can't wait.

Maybe next one can have Killer Croc. Just saying.

Don't let the god-awful Batman and Robin fool you, Bane is quite smart in the comics, a sort of genius bruiser.

I've read the comics and seen the 90's animated series...
Sorry, but he never was anything really that special.
We need an intelligent villain like the mad hatter, scarecrow, or poision ivy (who would make the most sense coupled with bane).

Ra's al Ghul will be back at some point. He damn well always comes back. Yes I like him as a villain if you hadn't guessed. Bane is alright but fairly mundane.

Bane. >.>

Not my first choice, and certainly not the most interesting villain to pick. I still would have loved to see Riddler.

Catwoman's alright though. I've always enjoyed that character.

I think they decided to go with one of the villains that dosen't resemble the Joker too much. The Riddler is one of the best villains in batman, but his still just a human. Bane is more of a force that is superiour to Batman (in strength at least, sometimes he is presented a an intelectual and sometimes as a idiotic musclehead).

I'm happy with the characters; I would've only wanted Penguin, Bane or The Riddler to be the villian, so this choice ticks the box.
Anne Hathaway, OK, I can picture her doing Catwoman well.
Tom Hardy? While I absolutely love the man, I just don't know about him and this role...
However, I thought the same about Heath Ledger, who I'd only really seen in '10 Things I Hate About you', and look how well he played The Joker.

I have high hopes about Nolan's casting choices.
I don't care how well this fits in with the comics, I have a good feeling Nolan will pull this off very well.

Yeah I wanted to see Riddler as well, if only for the chance to see him played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but on the up-side, Nolans never steered us wrong yet.

Brain is one of the most intelligent Batman villains ever (according to wikipedia...). He was one of the only villains to have learnt Batmans secret identity by himself. He created his own form of meditation, and is an expert in most sciences. Scarecrow just sprayed a whole bunch of drugs into people, he was a psychotic chemist, not really a super genius. Bane taught himself everything.

This is all according to Wikipedia, I honestly know nothing about Batman comics and canon.
