The Main Reason is our Combat-oriented Darwinist tendencies.
Life's a competition, people use what they can to win the competition, some use witt to become doctors and others, who are either to limited in the witt department or can do both (me) use physical power as a marker of superiority.

When the gladiators fight, it grants us all something;
Even though gladiators were forced into it, the roar of the crowd, the rush of adrenaline when you finally defeat your opponent & the established fact that is your strength are what he takes away from it, quite the ego trip if I do say so myself.
Whereas the audience, which is more often comprised of weaker people, get to exprerience, albeit to a limited degree, the adrenaline rush. But the most important thing to the crowd is the gamble, they don't necessarily have to put money on the table (although it helps), they will have a favorite, they'll want that favorite to win and in truth, no one knows who will win.

Thus is the magic of it all, Violence is Awesome.

I'm writing a paper for my college professor about the human being's want to watch death and destruction. What is it about watching a gladiator fight for his life that is so appealing? What about horror flicks where a girl is ripped into shreds with all the gory detail? Why do people feel entertained by watching such things? I would like you to tell me what you think it is.
What class is this for? It might help procure a better answer.

Gah my mind is broken.

...Because human beings are inherently warlike and evil?
Why do you think it's such a big deal when someone protests with nonviolence? Because it's alien to us.
We think, "That's against our nature."
WE DO.
I SWEAR. I HAVE PROOF.
...Okay, fine, it's just a theory of mine.
Your mind is so fragile, child. Mind broken over the knowledge of a misspelled state of being of a guy's penis? You will be among the first to fall when the murderbots take over.

Also, it's because it's usually made to look very, very cool.

I don't think that it's part of anything in our rationing mind to declare that Violence is awesome. I think that's part of the base animal part of people, like the part that makes us unable to socialize if we're raised by Wolves.

This part of the brain is also responsible for people in Online settings to loudly declare their awesomeness, if only to themselves.

You know, violence confuses me. I don't like watching it, but when I have accidentally (people getting murdered on camera) I sometimes get an erection.

This terrifies me.

I personally don't find that kind of thing entertaining. The reason I watch violent movies is to marvel at the skill displayed in some of the fight scenes. I think that horror movies are completely pointless and simply stimulate a persons base and animalistic desire for blood and death. I see shooting and fighting as an art form, not a source of gory fun.

I suspect a part of our attraction to violence is due to our history of being hunters/scavengers before agriculture really became a way of life. Since we used to hunt and kill or find dead things a lot, it is a part of our nature to still be drawn to those things. From an evolutionary standpoint, humans as farmers/city builders is still an infantile stage.

Because it's cathartic.

Gore and violence used in the entertainment media is usually meant to provoke an emotional reaction from the viewer or to draw attention away from the plot. Get someone creative enough on the development team and it looks like art.

Nah. I'm actually invulnerable to mental attack for the most part.
But overreacting is much more amusing.
Well, sure, you say that now, but I'm still tossing your gibbering form in front of the murderbots to slow their advance. Just so you know.

I find it interesting because it gives me a burst of adrenaline. It hypes me up (I have no idea if that is even correct grammar) and I almost feel like I'm the gladiator fighting for his life. I guess it draws me in and I almost feel immersed in the world the actors, directors, and writers are showing.
It's always appealing for a human to leave behind their own life and live in the shoes of someone else... Especially a hero who's battles invoke adrenaline rushes, and often through some perseverance and struggle, end in victory.
That is exactly how how I feel.

I forget exactly what its called, but it's something in psychology that explains why humans (who generally have bland or normal lives) love to lose themselves in the shoes of some character or general fictional existence. It may just be a general product of the normal human psyche, but I'm not exactly sure...

well whatever its called I'm sure there are plenty of us who feel the same about our lives. Video games gives us a way to imagine ourselves somewhere else. It gets creativity flowing (at least for me it does).
