Hi,

I was thinking about buying a new virtual console game as the last one I bought was secret of mana way back when. I'm looking for recommendations of great games that I may not have heard of. Secret of mana is an example of an excellent rpg on the VC which is not as well known as say paper mario.

I'm not exclusively looking for an RPG so any suggestions are welcome :)

ps I was thinking about super mario rpg? any thoughts on this?

cheers x

I came in here to recommend Super Mario RPG. >_>

Get it, it's great fun, even today.

Dear god, get it! If you have never played it, you're in for a treat. Best game EVAR!
Hmm, i've always wanted to try it, but i never really got into paper mario. Is it similar to paper mario or a different experience?

Ocarina of Time is more of a massive shining gem that blinds you instantly, so I suppose that doesn't count.
Have you tried Final Fantasy? Good fun.

Totally different. It was made by Square-Enix (back when it was just Square), so imagine a Final Fantasy game set in the Mushroom Kingdom with Mario characters. The combat system is fun, the characters are hilarious, and the story is fucking epic.

A lost gem not on any virtual console or download is Seiken Densetsu 3, which is the Direct sequel to Secret of mana a.k.a. Seiken Densetsu 2. The first Seiken Densetsu was renamed for the game boy in the US as Final Fantasy Adventure.

Hidden Gems (in my mind) currently for the virtual console.
StarTropics. NES
Phantasy Star. Sega Master System
Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole. Sega Genesis
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium. Sega Genesis
Bomberman '93. TurboGrafx-16
Ordyne. TurboGrafx-16
Solomon's Key. Virtual Console Arcade

The Return of Ishtar. Virtual Console Arcade (Not yet Released)
