The cutscene graphics in Resident Evil 2 blew my balls completely off when I saw it for the first time. No joke, I'm still trying to scrape them off the wall.

i dont think that counts, because its a cinematic. if that was the case then advent children for me :)
Well, even the in-game graphics. I think they're probably an even better example for this. They were damn good for their time, but playing it these days it's pretty bad I'll admit.

No love for Duke Nukem 3D? I was mighty impressed with it at the time, especially considering it was playable on a 486DX/33.

How about The Lion King platformer? That had some beautiful VGA graphics.

Donkey Kong Country, SNES. That game was gorgeous for it's time.

As others have said, Halo was my first foray into modern graphics. I must have spent the first 15 minutes on the second level just walking around looking at grass and water.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 on Dreamcast had some amazing 3D backgrounds and great 2D sprites and animations.

People tend to dismiss it nowadays, but when it first came out with the original 'Unreal', the Unreal Engine was absolutely mind-boggling. I only ever got into the series with the original Unreal Tournament released one year later, but even then the sorts of vistas and visuals that engine was pushing was unparalleled for its time.

That was mind-blowing for its time, as were many of the levels. Absolutely amazing!

Metal Gear Solid 1998, I remember when everyone was saying the graphics were revolutionary. Still I think they were for that time.

Metal Gear Solid 2:Sons of Liberty.
I bought a PS2 specifically for that game and it was one of the best game purchases i've ever made. I love that game and the visuals were just uh-maiz-ing... especially for the time.
Seriously, I still get wood everytime I think about that game... one of my favs of all time

Well, the real obvious pick is Final Fantasy 7. The Playstation was getting underway and Square saw this as an opportunity to see what they could do with this thing. So, moving up from the limits of Super Nintendo, they start making use of true 3D imagine for the first time. (Around this time, they also make Xenogears, which is also awesome.)

And while we're at it, I'd like to throw in a shout-out to Shadow Madness. Definitely a good piece of work for the time, also working with extensive 3D, although the overworld map didn't have this. Still a good game, though.

I'm sure that there was a time that Morrowind wasn't considered visually hideous.

I can remember me and my brother being blown away by the animation and visuals in Prince Of Persia when it first came out...

Then there was Donkey Kong Country, which brought amazing 32 Bit visuals to the SNES:

And of course, this little beauty, which to me still looks awesome today:

Sega's Arcade Racing Games (Virtua Racing, Daytona USA and Sega Rally) used to be mindblowing visually in Arcades and on Home Consoles.

The Super Nintendo had Donkey Kong Country, although the visual quality was a bit "fake", it is still one of the SNES's most impressive titles

Wave Race for Nintendo 64 made people drool with it's water effects and waves that were still impressive when compared to Splashdown for the PS2

And there was of course Unreal 1 for the PC, wich was the graphical pretty-boy in contrast to Half-Life 1's more mundane graphics.

EDIT: And how could i forget Gran Turismo for PS1, 2 and 3 that usually used more polygons for a single rear bumper than for the entire character of other games.

Doom 3
All of the MGS games (each of them pushed the envelope a little further for their time)
Morrowind and, for that matter, Daggerfall

Never played it before, but I heard that back then Far Cry's graphics were stunning and advanced at the time.

These, and Oblivion. I'd also add Mass Effect, which looks somewhat lifeless and bland nowadays.

Oblivion and Far Cry still manage to impress me from time to time with the lushness of their environments. Too bad Far Cry as a game was a pile of shit and Oblivion looks if not samey, bland and copy pasted, then buttfuck-ugly most of the time (goddamn texture pop-in and NPC's).

A lot of the games mentioned so far are/were not significantly ahead of their contemporaries.

Discounting FMVs, I'm listing games that were jawdroping compared to everything else available at the time:

Kings Quest V: First game that looked like a painting.
Gran Turismo: First game where gameplay looked like a FMV on any other game
Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast: First game with Arcade level graphics for home.

Most games today all look so good that nothing really stands out to me unless it has a very nice art style. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Okami look outstanding to me.

Conker's bad fur day:

Easily the crowning moment of glory for the N64, it was fully voice acted with Lip synching, it was amazing.

F-zero Gx

Especially in motion. 60fps, 30 players, it was bloody wizardry.
