Vita Prices Slashed at Best Buy

Best Buy has dropped the price of both the Wi-Fi and 3G versions of the Vita to $200.

A few days back the retail chain <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/126721-Target-Slashes-All-Vita-Prices-To-199>Target announced it would be cutting $50 off the price of its PlayStation Vitas, effectively giving the handheld the price drop countless gamers have been waiting for. Now, Best Buy has also lowered its own Vita prices, reducing both the <a href=http://www.bestbuy.com/site/PlayStation+Vita+%28Wi-Fi%29/2238218.p?id=1218315553269&skuId=2238218&st=playstation%20vita&cp=1&lp=1&AID=10597222&PID=1312731&URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2FPlayStation%2BVita%2B%28Wi-Fi%29%2F2238218.p%3Fid%3D1218315553269%26skuId%3D2238218%26st%3Dplaystation%2520vita%26cp%3D1%26lp%3D1&ref=39&loc=01&CJPID=1312731>Wi-Fi and <a href=http://www.bestbuy.com/site/PlayStation+Vita+%283G/Wi-Fi%29+Launch+Bundle/2095647.p?id=1218308724397&skuId=2095647&st=playstation%20vita&cp=1&lp=9&AID=10597222&PID=1312731&URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2FPlayStation%2BVita%2B%283G%2FWi-Fi%29%2BLaunch%2BBundle%2F2095647.p%3Fid%3D1218308724397%26skuId%3D2095647%26st%3Dplaystation%2520vita%26cp%3D1%26lp%3D9&ref=39&loc=01&CJPID=1312731>3G versions of the portable to $200 each. While this cut was an independent move on Best Buy's part, it would arguably lend further credence to speculation that Sony has a new price drop announcement in the works for its August 20th GamesCom conference.

Gamers interested in taking advantage of Best Buy's Vita deal may want to invest in the 3G bundle (only available in stores). Despite being the same price as its Wi-Fi only sibling, the 3G version comes packaged with an 8GB memory card and an offer for a free PSN came, though the latter apparently expired in May 2012. Nonetheless, considering how expensive the Vita's proprietary memory is, snagging an 8GB card, essentially for free, is about as good of a deal as you're get on a Vita currently. The fact that it comes with that extra 3G functionality doesn't hurt either.

8GB can run out fast however, which is why you might also want to take advantage of another ongoing Best Buy deal. The 32GB Vita memory card, usually priced at hefty $99.99, is currently <a href=http://www.bestbuy.com/site/32GB+Memory+Card+for+PlayStation+Vita/4757256.p?id=1218523194716&skuId=4757256&st=vita%20memory%20card&cp=1&lp=2>20 percent off. In turn, if you were to buy the Vita's 3G bundle and a 32GB memory card you'd be walking away with the handheld and 40GB of memory for $280, a mere $30 more than the Vita's current standard $250 price tag. Then again, you may also want to just wait a day and see what Sony has in store for GamesCom. Perhaps it has an <a href=http://www.worldsfactory.net/2013/08/16/ps-vita-could-get-massive-price-drop-images-suggest>even better deal in the works.

I honestly can't believe Sony still haven't done this. The 3DS had a price drop and it was in a better position than the Vita is in now, so why Sony are still being so stubborn about this is beyond me.

Between this and the lack of must have games it's almost as if Sony want the Vita to die. I love my Vita but I'm having less and less cause to turn the thing on.

Wow, so it only costs $80 now? But that's only 3.3 times more than a 32GB microSD card!

Let's just hope Sony announces more sane memory cards at GamesCom.

Information time:

There will be a price drop of the Vita at gamescom.

There will also be a price drop on the memory card prices. The 4GB card will be discontinued. The 8GB card will cost what the 4GB did, the 16 will cost what the 8GB did, and the 32GB card will cost what the 16GB did.

They will also introduce a 64GB memory card(will cost the same that the 32 GB costs now.)

Can you get the 3G version and not set it up on a data plan?
Yes, you can. I have one and all it tells me is there is no sim card. Even if you wanted a data plan, it's completely useless. You can't really download anything from the store without going over it immediately.

How often does it tell you? Does it get annoying?

For the love of god Sony, release some bloody games for the thing!

I'll happily buy one, but there needs to be games availlable first!

It just has a small icon on the top left that says no sim and a signal strength bar, like on a mobile phone. Completely ignorable.

OT: About time they dropped the prices, I got mine 2nd hand (new condition with the 32GB card included for $250 AUD) and I have got to say it's a great piece of hardware but at new prices it's just not worth it, their asking the cost of a PS3 to get one setup, not practical at all.

Well it's not like it has no games, there are alot of PS1, PSP and PS Mini games avaliable on the store, plus there are approx 240 games avaliable ranging across many genres of games:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_Vita_games

I'm not saying it's PS2 level, but lets be honest no system has PS2 numbers of games on release and few even get there years afterwards.

Y'know, I'm starting to think that the only reason Sony even keeps making handhelds is because admitting defeat to Nintendo would be too humiliating for them. And now it seems like they're desperately trying to sell it as a Wii U Gamepad clone due to them being scared of what happens when Nintendo's 1st party titles start selling.

Damn, I've already got a lot of games on my vita and I could see myself getting a shit ton of games for it if they have more cross buy games when the ps4 comes out. I'd love a 64 gig card cause carrying around physical games for a portable system is annoying. Is there a sauce on this info or just a theory?

Keep in mind there's also a strong rumor of a new model of Vita to go with PS4 launch.

Then again, it's not a bad handheld at this point for $200. SO MANY RPGs.

What exactly are you looking for on the Vita? I have more games than I can finish on it right now. Seriously, if you can't find enough games to play on it now, then maybe handhelds aren't your thing. It's lacking in the RPG and shooter genres, but some really good examples of those are coming by the end of the year.

Hmm. Well, if the system had games outside of Persona 4, it'd be more appealing.
I've had the chance to use one; it's a great piece of hardware and Sony hasn't done anything so overtly awful as to remain on my shitlist in a while.

I might grab one come Black Friday just to replace my aging PSP and MP3 player assuming I don't jump on the Tablet bandwagon.

What I'd be happy with is a decent race sim, a GTA clone, a portable RPG in the Bethesda mould, a really good Elite clone, or an MGSish stealth/action game. Any one of those would do, and indeed I already have almost all of those between my PSP and DSi, but I've yet to see any on the Vita.

As for mobile games not being my thing... ..I still have a Sega game gear, original Game Boy, a rather battered GB Colour (Damn you perfect dark), a second gen Atari Lynx and a NeoGeo pocket. Though I'll admit I'd only call the NeoGeo and gameboys portable by todays standards. And these days I play quite a bit on my mobile as well, I love mobile games - I just like generas it appears Sony or the publishers don't care about.
