I have been working out as of late and thought I should start taking Vitamins. Well, I looked up Vitamin D and immediately thought of gamers and I wanted to share what I have found.

Vitamin D plays an important role in the maintenance of organ systems:
* Vitamin D regulates the calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood by promoting their absorption from food in the intestines, and by promoting re-absorption of calcium in the kidneys.
* It promotes bone formation and mineralization and is essential in the development of an intact and strong skeleton. However, at very high levels it will promote the resorption of bone.
* It inhibits parathyroid hormone secretion from the parathyroid gland.
* Vitamin D affects the immune system by promoting phagocytosis, anti-tumor activity, and immunomodulatory functions.

Vitamin D deficiency can result from inadequate intake coupled with inadequate sunlight exposure, disorders that limit its absorption, conditions that impair conversion of vitamin D into active metabolites, such as liver or kidney disorders, or, rarely, by a number of hereditary disorders. Deficiency results in impaired bone mineralization, and leads to bone softening diseases, rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, and possibly contributes to osteoporosis. Research has indicated that vitamin D deficiency is linked to colon cancer; conflicting evidence links vitamin D deficiency to other forms of cancer.

So, you can see why gamers popped into my head. So start taking a multivitamin! Just bought some myself!

But I'm at full health, I only need to start looking for health packs, or 'vitamins' as you call them once I get damaged.

I've been taking them for a few years now. Apparently, vitamin D defficiency is linked to deppression too, but I can't remember where I heard that, so it may not be true.

multivitamin tablets don't really work that well.

not really a substitute for getting out in the sun, eating more fruit and veg etc

On a different but related note omega 3 increases brain power. Also with the Vitanim D talk i heard that most Australians get their needs of exposure in the sun that it was only 15 minutes a day needed. I am probably wrong please do not try to kill me if this is true, in fact a the real figure would be appreaciated.

Unless of course these 'vitamins' allow me to buff myself beyond full health?
Let's keep the buffing of yourself....to yourself :)

As for the Omega 3, you are very correct. It also helps to lower bad cholesterol, so I try to take one of those pills every other day.

Multivitamins are really good for you, but you have to take them over time to show effect. Plus, as Nightfish said, there is nothing like getting outside in the sun and eating veggies. Not so amazingly, when taking vitamins, working out actually helps the vitamins to show their effects quicker by your body and muscles needing the nutrients. So, even walking for 30 minutes a day and taking a vitamin could be very beneficial to your health, which in turn, will help you *DING* level up.

Or you could, y'know, just stand out in the sunshine, you lazy bugger.

We're full of vitamin D, we just need sunlight to synthesize it.
Go outside? :) Actually, the stereotype of gamers is actually what made me think of Vitamin D as I was reading through it. Natural is always better than created supplemental.

Umm, you mean no one else plays with their Wii by the window with a platter of veggies and fruit nearby ... and a meal of meat & potatoes afterwards?

Screw stereotypes, gamers as shut ins hasn't been true for years, at least none of the gamers I know fit the stereotypes.

Well, I know a TON of stereotypical gamers. Where the "Hybrid" class of gamers is becoming more apparant (can play video games, plays sports, goes outside, can be seen as part of society, etc) there are a TON of the stereotypical gamer. I've seen it, still see it and I feel bad. :( At least Knump has a reason to be inside.

Multivitamins aren't necessary if you have anything like a reasonable diet. Which will also include lots of micronutrients you wouldn't otherwise get, and generally leave you a lot better off.
