I have no idea why I'm doing this thread, it just popped into my head. If it sinks, it sinks. If it swims, it swims.

Now, I'm a weirdo when it comes to music. I focus primarily on the vocals. Having a good guitarist, bassist, drummer, tromboner (?)...that just sounds dirty...is just a just a nice bonus.

And I'd like to make a thread dedicated to the vocalists. Even if they play instruments while singing, this is purely about the vocals.

Who is your favorite? And some others that you like.

My favorite is Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, as anyone who has read anything I've posted in any music thread can probably guess. I love the mush-mouth'd bastard.

I have no idea what he said, and internet lyric sites can't even come to a consensus. But I don't care. Hell, I read somewhere that not even the band knows the lyrics.

Honorable mention goes to Geddy Lee of Rush.

So yeah, discuss your favorite vocalists. Or even your least favorite.

I'll pick two from each gender.

Male:

- Anthony Kiedis. (RHCP)
- David Bowie.

I am very happy I can nearly immitate their voice if I put my effort in it!!

Female:

- Kate Bush.
- Shirley Bassy. (Or Edith Piaf ... hard one).

Even though I can appreciate a technically skilled singer, I think character is just as important and so are the lyrics. Thats why I'm a fan of Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, David Byrne (Talking Heads), Craig Finn (The Hold Steady) and tonnes of other singers that maybe haven't got a great range of timber, but their voices add more to the music than it would if they were classically trained singers.

Well we can't have this discussion without a Fleet Foxes mention.
But I'm also loving this girl Catherine Ireton who's in the new Belle & Sebastian project
Another one of my faves is the classic-rock sounding voice of Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys

I'm more into instrumentalists but I do love comedic vocalists.

My favorite vocalists are Chris Patterson, Mike McCormick, Trevor Strong and Weird Al Yankovic.

Jared Leto has one of the purest and most natural vocals I've ever heard (as a tenor, that is), no effort when he sings. And I especially ADORE the colour of his voice, wonderfully curved.

And I'll always regret for being a woman and not having a voice like hers (yeah, I want a lot):

And she does what she wants with her voice on stage! *sigh*

I think the vocalist isn't the most important part of a rock band but they do have the ability to make or break one.

Favourite?

Ben Nichols of Lucero.
And Tom Waits.

Nothing beats too much whiskey and waaaaay too many cigarettes when it comes to making an awesome voice.

Myles Kennedy from Alter Bridge and more recently doing the vocals on two tracks from Slash's new album and doing the touring vocals for Slash.

Dallas Green from Alexisonfire and more importantly in regards to his vocals his solo work City and Colour.

And finally Jeremy DePoyste who does the clean vocals for the band The Devil Wears Prada.

Okay, I'm about to say a name no one on this site has probably heard before...
Jón Þór Birgisson (Jónsi) from Sigur Rós
I love the way he sings in falsetto, if makes the music more emotional towards me.

Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, Matt Bellamy, Simon Neill.

However, the number 1 spot goes to Miss Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Nearly all my favourite vocalists are men : / not good for gender equality here...

Bruce Dickinson - Iron Maiden
Meat Loaf
Stevie Nicks
Whoever sings for Clutch, he has an awesome voice
Gene Kelly
Corey Taylor (ooh, controversial)
Alexi Laiho

But yeah, I totally agree, the vocalist is usually the key part of the band - he/she can make or break the quality of their music
