I used to be a vocalist...but this kind of vocalist.

I love the old BMTH from Count Your Blessings. Suicide Season was not very good and the fact they ditched out on the warped show i went to this year kinda rubbed me the wrong way. But i still love the old shit.

I also do these kind of vocals, as well as some clean stuff too.

Paul Masvidal, some of my favourite vocals.

And Mikael Akerfeldt, my favourite, no competition.
Motherfucking Ninjad.

Ill add Frank Mullen and Thomas Lindenberg for awesome growling/screaming.
Frank Mullen is a good shout actually, plus he's hilarious live :D

Even though I can appreciate a technically skilled singer, I think character is just as important and so are the lyrics. Thats why I'm a fan of Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, David Byrne (Talking Heads), Craig Finn (The Hold Steady) and tonnes of other singers that maybe haven't got a great range of timber, but their voices add more to the music than it would if they were classically trained singers.
pretty much what he said, beefheart, waits, dylan..
oh, and brian wilson,i love his voice

Shirley Manson of Garbage. I can listen to just about any Garbage song and perk up when I hear her voice, even if the song is kind of shit.

Now, I'm a weirdo when it comes to music. I focus primarily on the vocals. Having a good guitarist, bassist, drummer, tromboner (?)...that just sounds dirty...is just a just a nice bonus.
I agree with this. Obviously it's important to have good instrumental music, but that alone does nothing. Strong vocals are vital, and the instruments just back them up, in my opinion.

My favourite singers would be Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford and Eric Adams.

Mike Patton - the range of that guys voice is beyond measure. He can be growling right from the bowels of hell one moment and then singing choirstyle with the angels in the next. Check out Mr. Bungle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PBH5ez-Znw) and Faith No More (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9X_msJ-7OI). Yes, that is the same guy - also he's The Darkness, but that goes without saying.
This guy speaks the truth.

Also Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of salvation) and the great Freddie Mercury.

RIP Nightwish
Tarja Turunen made them great, in my humble opinion.
Well said. I hate bashing people I've never met, but Annette doesn't really fit my previous vision of them :(

David Bowie is obviously really good too.
I'm gonna' go against the grain here, and say that I prefer Annette. Tarja had a bad case of mushmouth, and I can't help but laugh when she tries to sing about masters, apprentices, and wishmasters, but it comes out sounding like hamsters, dentists, and fishmasters.

Some other vocalists that I like:

Dio

Ozzie

Bruce Dickenson

Mathias Blad [(Spelling?) of Falconer, for those who don't know]

Ella Fitzgerald

Louis Armstrong (although more for his stage presence than his actual voice)

There's plenty more, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. I actually came into this thread expecting a question for any vocalists on the escapist, but I guess this thread works too.

He's pretty good, actually. He's in a metal band, but he's actually a musical theater geek, so he has more of a classically trained sound to his voice. As a classically trained vocalist, I appreciate it.
