Y'know, I liked X-XIII.

I think it has more to do with when you were introduced to the series. Many people who liked VI the best thought the series went downhill from VII on, and now people who liked VII-IX are thinking the same thing about X.

So, I guess the "generations" of FF can be split up thus: I-VI, VII-IX, and X- whenever.

Yeah, I'm just kind of making assumptions here, but I don't think it's too far off.
Interesting division but I still prefer the I-IX and then X-XIII, the main feature that divided >6 and 7< was the 3D rendering. Being someone that played the game since 1 I cant picture too much contrast between that gap, yeah the story element and characters in 7< were a bit less compelling than its predecessors but only ever so slightly.
Then X< came... developers realized that instead of using complex story elements and likable characters, only pretty cinemas, great graphics and voice acting was enough to make a successful sale. And you know what? it's true! so why try anything else?, with today's technology is not such a big deal to make pretty stuff in a console anyways.

Concurro.
But to tell you the truth, I only liked 1 to 7 and 9. You can see why I like 10. [/sarcasm]

I think I can agree with this. I'd maybe even go as far as saying voice acting ruins most jrpgs. Part of the problem is that the voice actors are usually not very good, the other part is that the dialog isn't that great either.
Voice acting also messes with the pacing of the game as well. I liked it when the characters were in a room talking and I'd read the text, now there has to be a lame cutscene for every conversation which slows the game immensely.

I disagree, completely. I will start by stating that Final Fantasy IX and Tactics still remain as my favorites in the series. On the other hand I believe that voice acting has worked wonders for the series. You see, one of the things I had problems with was connecting to characters who only talked in voice boxes. As petty as that might be, the addition of voices allowed them to emote, it gave them more personality than the text could (and it forced translation to be a little more rigorous). I would actually argue that Final Fantasy XIII has some of the best characterization in the series and I don't say that lightly. I've played pretty much every numeral game in the series and I still think that this one took the cake on characters. Part of that is that (I would argue) most of the voice actors are actually quite good. The characters being able to convey emotion on a vocal level is an important thing, especially in a game as character-driven as Final Fantasy. XIII actually may yet take the place of my favorite in the series and while I can agree that Final Fantasy X had some bad voice actors, I think that the series is recovering and improving from the major changes that have happened over the last 10 years or so.

I know a lot of people feel the same way I do about the quality of recent FF releases. 7-9 are 3 of my favorite games ever, with awesome charactors, story and everything else, with enough variation between them to make each one uniquely special.

Then 10 came, which was ok, although everything seemed slighty worse, the charactors wern't as good, story was worse, and the plot and gameplay were annoyingly linear.

12 had the most boring one dimentional charactors ever, with an equily dull story to boot. They added some nice extra bits, and it wasn't as linear as 10, but I just didn't care. Without a compelling story or charactors it felt so empty.

And now 13, which I think Yahtzee nailed in his review. Exept Sazh, all the charactors were annoyingly smug and whiney, and everything just so damn linear.

Anyway, I'm gonna go ahead and blame voice actors above all, for filling everything with annoying phrases like "Heros don't back down!", and generally making everyone annoyingly optomistic and stereotypical. At least I could charactorise them myself without, but now they just take on the ultra bland persona projected by the voice actors, reciting optimistic phrases, and exactly filling the stereotypes I'm trying to imagine they arn't.
I do not think it only was the smug phrases. Its the whiny, high pitched voices of the character, the over-the-top energy of that one character who just doesn't stop moving or talking, and the retarded vocalizations that aren't words (by that i mean things like giggling, sighing, grunting, etc).

Ugh, I remember that clip...

Yeah I think that's true. With 7 I had Cloud and Barret and Sephiroth with the voices all in my head, and it sounded pretty good up there. Tidus makes me want to stab my eardrums with a screwdriver.

Both of you are taking the video out of context...

Watch the whole scene and see why they are laughing ridiculously

I thought FF2 killed it.
Which one, the actual FF2 or the US FF4?
The one where you endlessly grind everything.
Oh, you don't grind everything, just yourself. Endless self-inflicted wounds before the admiring audience of one's enemies is the route to true power!

Back to the topic, what I think ruined Final Fantasy is the change from having four party members to three as well as the increasingly cumbersome and peculiar system ability systems. Seriously, License Points? Sphere Grids? Junctioning? I remember when you could buy spells and that'd be that. Even in FF6, it was just a matter of equipping an Esper for a while, and FF9 it was equipment. All the post SNES games seemed to turn into worldwide scavenger hunts inexplicably involving ostriches and trading cards.

I thought graphics killed it. FF6 is the best.
That was the complaint before. Seven came out and everyone clamored about how the graphics where going to be the downfall of the series. Seven brought more people into the series then any previous game.

Ten did the same with the current generation of game players who grew up on the PS2, even if they all like to claim they got their start with the PS1, but even someone 20 now would have been 10 when the PS2 came out.

As far as I'm concerned 7 is overrated garbage. 8 was decent but 9 was even worse than 7. Ughhh. 10-13 are pretty good I'd say. 13 coulda been better sure, and maybe 12 was just decent, but better than 7. Try not looking through rose colored glasses.
