Apparently no one is safe against the wrath of Youtube's content ID bots, not even the content creators themselves. Youtube has issued a copyright claim against a video uploaded by VVVVVV content creator Terry Cavanagh on a gameplay trailer for the game he created.

According to Terry Cavanagh's twitter, the claim was made by a firm called Indmusic.

Yeah, this whole "We just kind of assumed we held the copyright on that" has been a recurring problem. Copyright laws really need to be fixed.

I'm pretty sure it's not that he doesn't have copyright. These things happen: You'll have, say, an interview with gameplay footage in it, you copyright that interview, since you don't want people stealing the interview part, and as far as bots know it's 50/50 as to which one infringed on whom, if anyone.

I know some people with smaller channels whose videos are now monetized by companies that have no relation whatsoever to them or the content they used in their videos. One video was made entirely of images and music that are public domain with his voice over the top of it doing a reading and it's now monetized by some obscure European company.

People are taking advantage of YT's stupid system to monetize stuff that doesn't belong to them. And it's not the content creators that have taken advantage of the system, they're victims in these recent events relating to video game copyrights.

Wasn't "indmusic" the same company who filed the copyright claim against Gavin Dunne?

Yep, the same thing happened to Gav of Miracle of Sound. Youtube's operators should be embarrassed. They need to fix this pronto, and then fire the dyslexic orangutans who designed this system in the first place.

It's also happening to Jonathan Blow, who posted gameplay footage for his new game that he's the director of.
Watch Mojo's channel was also shut down 3 days ago because of this system, but has since been reinstated. Pretty much I see many class action lawsuits against Google and YouTube in the future. :p

This also happened to Mike Bithell of Thomas Was Alone fame.

The more information that comes out about this whole fiasco, the more it's obvious to me that this is mostly down to Youtube's own systems (and, not totally related, but still part of the issue, the multi channel networks). Many of these claims are coming out as being made automatically for entities that do have at least a tangential claim to the content but don't actually want to exercise the claim. In many cases, they don't even know about the claim being enacted and are working to release them when notified (though this sounds like it's a major pain for them too as each "offending" channel has to be cleared individually).

In short, Youtube needs to fix it's shit as it's their systems that are pissing everyone else off.

I'm trying to figure out if the people running Youtube are evil and have gone mad with power or are just stupid. I honestly can't tell anymore.

Shit is getting out of hand. Youtube better be working 24/7 to fix this shit, or else they'll lose people and never get them back.
Yeah, as far as I've heard, it's not happening.

Apparently they sent an email out that effectively said "this is the new content ID system. Deal with it."

Cr1tiKal talked a little bit about it. Google and YouTube effectively have a monopoly, so they can do whatever the fuck they want. And we're seeing them do it more and more lately.

Good. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's these lazy YouTubers trying to make a quick buck off the hard work of themselves.

...Waaaaaait.

Yes people have been submitting illegal copyright claims to Google rampantly now that they have automated bots transferring funds to whoever comes up in the database, it's the perfect scam because Google doesn't check a single fucking thing on companies end until the rightful owners find out who has been using their shit.

Yep and they can run off with the money and delete everything after. Right now people are uploading stock/free to use Music, sounds audio then flagging everything else that uses it. They need to at least put the money in limbo so no one can make anything after doing this.

Most people forget the most basic thing about Youtube:
It is just a site.

If Youtube want to handle their site like this, none can make them change.
Also they don't care for a good reason: They know they have the monopoly and will have ALWAYS a good amount of Youtubers still work for them, even most of their videos get delete in the progress.

The future of the Web is in decentralization. Several years down the road YouTube will be replaced with a BitTorrent style distribution model of nodal networks serving up content, in a Freenet model essentially. Facebook will have been usurped by DIASPORA* or another decentralized social network where you host your own content and control it with public/private key technology.

Eventually the makeup of the Internet itself will resemble these decentralized small world topographies. I'm talking 20 years down the road, but we are definitely headed that way.

I seriously hope google will get sued into the ground over this. There has been plenty of bullshit from youtube, the second-latest one being the google+ integration. But now they're actually robbing people of their livelyhood because they refuse to admit a mistake and can't be assed to fix their broken automatic copyright claim system.

It's not their problem, it's the distribution company that's in the wrong here. You get what you pay for I suppose.
