I was having a conversation about relationships with my cousin earlier, and I was rather startled about his opinions. Cheifly, what a 'normal' number of relationships is.

Now, he's one year my junior (I'm 19), and he's had 2 girlfriends in his teen years, whereas I've had 6, of varying degrees of seriousness. Now, I'm hardly a playa', but my cousin seemed to think this was ridiculous, much to my suprise. Lots of my friends have had as many, if not more partners in the same amount of time and usually I've thought nothing of it. Except for a couple of people, I've thought that my friends have had a pretty normal 'track record', for want of a better term. Whilst we're not DnD playing basement nerds we're hardly a bunch of Jersey Shore-esque sexed up assholes either. Perhaps it's a difference in where we live (He lives in Ireland, I live in England), but I was wondering what the norm is for most people.

I've not included a poll because I would rather people had a good chat about it, and I wasn't really sure what people's answers would be. I've always thought that going through your teen years with no girlfriends at all is sort of... missing out. But then I would say any more than around 8-10 is a little odd, considering your only a teenager for 8 years.

So Escapists, what do you think is a normal amount of teenage relationships? be as vague as you like.

Normal is subjective, but on average I have no idea really.

*shrug* I had 2, but I'm a fan of relationships not flings. If you can have a lot of good relationships in those years, kudos glad you could find them. If you had a few, hope they lasted. If you had none, well, at least I'm not that guy.

Weird for me personally is more than maybe 5, but some of my friends have had as many as you so it doesn't seem AS weird

I know people - 16 year olds like myself - who've had 10+ girl/boyfriends, and some who've had none. I've had 8, if you're after a direct contribution, but it's a bit iffy... it was only 4 different people (two of them twice, one of them three times).

I'm... I'm indecisive, okay? >.<

That's another thing that's kinda odd... I guess I don't know the circumstances, but dating someone for the third time is strange.

I've had one...and I'm 15. There is no real average for relationships(girlfriends/boyfriends), but some people I know have had 15ish in one year. It all depends on how serious you take a relationship and if you actually like the person or are just using them for pleasure...

I'm 16 and have had none. Am I missing out? Yes. Is it my fault that nobody exists as a capatible partner? No.

I don't think there really is a "normal" when it comes to relationships. There are far too many variables involved, in my honest opinion.

Yeah, making the same mistake twice was bad but falling for that girl's wily tricks a third time was downright silly. It shan't be happening again. Probably.

promiscuity is a deceptive term to categorise. One might think you a slag for having lots of boyfriends, others for having sex before the age of consent. There is no universal label, but there are some things that are universally frowned upon (such as having enough relationships to form a 1 a week average (although who would call that a 'relationship' is anyone's guess)).

Everyones different I guess. I'm 21 and have had 2, although the current ones been going on for over 4 years. My brother is a whore, whereas a couple of my friends haven't had any relationships. I'd say that nothing is weird.

There really is no normal number. It varies according to the person and where exactly you are, the people around you, and how many ways you have of meeting people. Also, if someone's in a committed relationship for most of that time, then obviously they're not going to be able to pursue other relationships. Well, maybe they will, but that's a whole other story...

Woah woah woah. lay off the dnd. Plus. It's all subjective to certain groups of people. Though I personally would find it not normal maybe it's a regular thing where you live or went to school.

This forum is like a guidance counselor's waiting room sometimes.

We're animals, our primary instinct is to ensure the survival of the species. How often we get to do so is determined by how many people live around you and how attractive you are.

I'm 18 and I've had 4 boyfriends (5 if you count having one date but deciding not to continue). But its not a race of anything. My advice, only stay in a relationship with people you can see yourself being with forever. It makes it a happier relationship to me

6 does not seem that high if you started dating at 16 then thats only 2 people a year till 19.

I didn't have any myself but that's hardly a good example of the wider population

Eh, I suppose it's not that bad until they start getting pregnant. I've seriously seen a 15 yr old girl in my math class pregnant o_O. That's "weird".
