IF we received ANY snow where I live, I doubt the authority figures would react by doing anything less than evacuating their families and loved ones to their custom-build Vault-Tec Vaults.

Being a Texan (no haters please; I'm not some inbred hick, and surprise surprise, I'm a Democrat), I consider us lucky if we get snow once every five years or so, but at the same time, I have a reason to hate it. I work at a small-time grocery store, and if there's snow or sleet in the forecast, people start panicking and flock to the store to buy "necessities." I already check out enough rednecks and crotchety old women; I'd prefer not to have to check out ten times as many in one day ._.

eh it depends honestly, where i live, it'll literally be perfect sunshine out, then you'll go inside to take a shit then head back outside and it'll be hailing golf balls and your roof is about to get taken off (this applies year around) so if the trucks dont get out there fast enough to lay down some salt and get the roads clear (my college is a commuting college kinda) so they'll close down if its really bad (its only happened once, and that was when there was a good 2 feet of snow, and it was -16 out so it froze like a ************) but if its just a bit, even if its ice, you haul your ass out there and get shit done.

Where I'm at we don't get snow so much as soft crap that falls around midnight and turns into a solid sheet of ice by morning. That said, usually a late start if there's less than 2 inches.

I'm from Canada. When I was growing up, my school only shut down once. On that day we had 3 feet of snow fall in the morning. Between 7:30 when the bus picked me up till noon when they sent us home we had 3 feet fall. The only time it ever shut down the school.

The buses wouldn't run if it was below -35'c.

Well, currently I live in Virgina. We got out of school an hour early due to snowfall, even though it was only about and inch. So far it looks like we'll be getting a delay tomorrow as well. However, our superintendent is odd. He cares more about ice as opposed to snow.

I lived in Alaska a few years back, so it's just laughable to see everyone freak out over an inch of snow.
Snow comes in a couple variates, the snow in places that get a lot of snow is generally a "dry" snow, that while it's a little slick compressing it into a snow ball as far as it will go doesn't make an ice cube.
Where I'm from, the snow is very wet. If I were to take a lightly compressed 6 inch diameter ball, and compress it down as far as it will go, not only are my hands going to be soaked, but I will have a 1/2 inch ice ball. That kind of snow becomes sheet ice after being on the ground for about 2 hours, making any kind of driving dangerous. Especially in places that aren't used to snow.

My area's system enrages me. I live in Ottawa (Canada), and we are legally obligated have a certain number of school days per year. If a snow day was ever called, we'd have to make it up at some other point.

This is why no snow day was called when it snowed around 10 inches in a night.... during a bus strike..... in -30 weather... over exams. That was a great week.

In Israel, we're lucky if it snows even once per winter, and where I live we don't get much more than a centimeter or two. Still, it's a snow day for us, and everything pretty much shuts down.

-30 Degrees Celcius is normal where I live, people start freaking out when the snow begins to melt, not when it's snowing out (a blizzard is a minor inconvenience, as opposed to a reason to shut the town down, for one example).

I stongly dislike living in the Northwest Territories, I really do.

how do those in positions of authority near you react to snow?
Not at all, I think.
I was in the city yesterday. The -ing INNER CITY of my hometown, and everywhere I stepped I had to fight to remain upright. Streets, curbs, paths, everything was covered in a layer of what I can only describe as snow slime, probably the slipperiest substance known to mankind.
I expect to read a lot about injuries in the news today...

The outer areas where I live are even worse. The roads are layered with snow, and where the snow breaks away, there's ice.
Last year our country ran out of salt to keep the streets ice-free. There are huge storage compounds full of salt, and they were all used up last year. This year they seem to try to save it all...

I live in minnesota, and our school administration are morons. just today, there was a snow storm from about 11:30 to 2:00, so school got out early at 12. Lets see, you could leave school schedule normal, so by the time school is done at 2:30, the snow would have stopped, and the roads probably partially plowed, OR you could let all these teenagers out into the road right as the storm is at its worst, and people are sliding everywhere across the road. genius =_=
(not that i would actually complain to someone, as i made it home safely, and got home 2.5 hours early. WOOT)

I live in Vermont. In the hilly/mountainous parts, and we get lots of snow. If its below 4 feet, there's school.

I've heard Finland takes a hardcore approach to it though. Like if there's 10 feet of snow, bring skies.
You're absolutely right there Irridium. I've never heard anything being closed because of snow in Finland. The whole concept of snowed in makes as much sense to a Finn, as not going out because it's partly cloudy.

I live in Oregon, basically we only get snow once every couple years (we've got plenty of precipitation, but not enough of a cold front to get snow) so basically when it snows, the entire city of Portland shuts down and people abandon their cars on the side of the road. It?s pretty hilarious, especially if you live by a hill and people fail to get their cars up. Although once every five years or so we get a massive ice storm which basically shuts the city down for a week.
And I would get a sled pulled by various dogs found in my neighbourhood and make my way down to Melbourne to join you in said snowball fight.

In the Bay Area of California, if there's a half inch of snow, school lets out for about 20 minutes so that the kids can see it. It hasn't snowed here for over 25 years.

I live in Bay Area California. It almost never happens here unless you live up in the hills. The few times it has happened in the past few decades, it was only a few inches and schools weren't closed.
