Hello dear Escapist, a little background information 1st. Live in the southern united states, just north enough to get snow/sleet, but just south enough for the shcool board to *Pun not intended* freeze up when it does finally hit. Today, December 17, we had less than an inch of solid snowfall. The school system shut down all schools in about 10 counties.

So here is the question, my friends, how do those in positions of authority near you react to snow? Do you live in an area where you never recieve it and dont have to worry about it? Do you live where snow is a constant, something that simply becomes part of the norm? Do you live where any amount of snow causes almost complete sociotal breakdown? Share with us your tales of intrest!

EDIT: Huh, didn't know there were so many N.C. member around here.

I live in Vermont. In the hilly/mountainous parts, and we get lots of snow. If its below 4 feet, there's school.

I've heard Finland takes a hardcore approach to it though. Like if there's 10 feet of snow, bring skies.

Heh I'm in NC also (Wake Forest). Closing everything today was ridiculous. A delay maybe but even that would be to much. I'm originally from New Jersey where this little even would not even warrant a delay.

Generaly the schools around here only close if the salt trucks can't get out to clear the roads, or didn't presalt a bad snowfall.

(I live in a county with only 2,000 people in it in southern indiana.)

I go to College in PA, so we almost never close, lol. We did last year because of a back to back blizzard though.

I live near D.C. and the schools near me are led by complete idiots when snow starts to fall. Six inches of snow and they like to call it two hours late. Oh no, five people got into accidents near the school? I'm sure it was just a coincidence, there will still be school! I hate my superintendent.

If it snowed where I lived, it'd truly be a Christmas Miracle.

It's pretty decent around here (Nova Scotia, Canada). We get school off if there's a storm, but not if there's snow or ice on the ground. But then, we're used to snow, so..

I live in New York, and I'm only a couple miles away from a fairly large lake. Basically, unless there's a freaking Wooly Mammoth crossing downtown I'm going to be in school.

I'll be honest, I have never experienced that the schools have had to close because of snow where I live, Norway, even though we do get lots of snow.

Appearantly there is a rule though if the school can't heat the classroom up to atleast 18 degrees celsius, 64.4 ºF, the students are allowed to leave.

And usually outside where I live it's -4 ºF to -13 ºF

But at my grandparents who live 2 hours away, they had -29.2 ºF and tons of snow xD

Where I live it takes 6 inches of snow and a blizzard conditions to close school. Hell when I was in high school we picked up 16 inches of snow and had to go to school. It also takes -25 degrees to have a 2 hour delay. and -30to-35 to close.

It doesn't snow here (Sydney, Australia). We've just spent the past Winter bitching about how cold the 18*C average was. Yeah, don't judge us.

If the average snowfall is really low, like most southern states, people tend to react poorly to snow. Thing is, people aren't used to driving in snowy conditions and are more likely to drive off the road. It all depends how the population is used to the driving conditions.

Apparently Britain is about to get eight inches of snow over the weekend. Right now it's a balmy five degrees for most of England. There had better be a fucking blizzard in the next two days to justify my having to buy a train ticket to get home.

I grew up in Massachusetts. It really depended on the superintendent to determine what was what on school closings. Some towns were notorious for closing with as few as 2 inches of snow. My town would usually close only at greater than 6 inches most of the time, unless the roads were really icy or it was supposed to snow heavier by the end of the day. Even then, if a foot of snow could be cleared away without incident by the morning, we'd still have school sometimes.

I go to college in Connecticut now, where we haven't had more than a few inches of snow on any one day. Nothing's happened.
