Im near Toronto Canada, last year, we didnt have a single snow day. Which sucks. This year, in the past 2 weeks, we've missed a total of 5 days of school.

Today was a snow day actually.

They don't plow residential roads very well around here, I'm lucky I live on a road with a school so they plow my street as an exception.

Worst thing here is the way it can get a little warm during the day to turn everything slushy before it freezes solid over night. Morning commutes are half driving half sliding some days.

Of course, anybody who lives here should have a four wheel drive vehicle/all weather tires since this kind of thing is expected. Without a four wheel drive how would I make it to the mountain with my snowboard? That would totally suck, not being able to shred like a beast whenever I like.

So, overall we handle it pretty well after the first snow which is when everybody is knocking the rust off the old winter driving skills. That first storm can cause some pretty crazy things though...

If you live in a snowy area and have a large four wheel drive vehicle you like to haul ass around in, I can't wait until you slide right off the road and get stuck. Four wheel drive helps you keep control and steer but it doesn't help much with the freakin' brakes portion bro! It also won't help you regain traction after you lose it! Your gonna smash your super cool lifted Toyota! All we'll see is your stupid flood lamps on your useless roll bar poking up out of a ten foot snow drift! I won't stop to help you either, it's cold outside.

Well, currently I live in Virgina. We got out of school an hour early due to snowfall, even though it was only about and inch. So far it looks like we'll be getting a delay tomorrow as well. However, our superintendent is odd. He cares more about ice as opposed to snow.

I lived in Alaska a few years back, so it's just laughable to see everyone freak out over an inch of snow.

Hey, cool! (No pun intended) Prince William got snowed out, too.
The county site is acting up, so there's no way to tell about school tomorrow.
Good to know there's other Virginian escapists out here, too.

In Erie, Pennsylavania, the school system hasnt issued a snow day since 1907. they had 3 feet of snow overnight and had no warning.

I live in Scotland and we shut down when there is a bit of snow, even though we see it coming.

My old school district was pretty good when it came to canceling school due to snow. We usually don't get that much where I live so it isn't that often that school is closed, but they have let us out early a couple times and had it end up where it didn't snow that much. It hasn't really snowed at all this year (except for a few flurries) so my current school hasn't needed to close. Which means I have no idea how they respond to adverse weather. I just hope that either it snows enough to have classes canceled or it doesn't snow at all. My 1 hour hike to class is bad enough without a foot or so of snow.

I currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and as such have no need to worry about snow. I did live in Michigan for the last few years though, and back there it would have to be well over 3 feet of snow for anyone to get even mildly upset about it, let alone closing down public buildings.

Hello dear Escapist, a little background information 1st. Live in the southern united states, just north enough to get snow/sleet, but just south enough for the shcool board to *Pun not intended* freeze up when it does finally hit. Today, December 17, we had less than an inch of solid snowfall. The school system shut down all schools in about 10 counties.

So here is the question, my friends, how do those in positions of authority near you react to snow? Do you live in an area where you never recieve it and dont have to worry about it? Do you live where snow is a constant, something that simply becomes part of the norm? Do you live where any amount of snow causes almost complete sociotal breakdown? Share with us your tales of intrest!

There is a problem with my school district. Even when every other school is closed, and there is like a foot of snow, we rarely close.
It takes a really strong blizzard to close our school, but only a few inches and everybody else calls off.

I just found out recently that our super-intendant came from Alaska.

Upstate New York is pretty good about it, basically anything that seriously messes up the roads is school-closing weather. Between something around 6 in to a few feet is where they draw the line when they can't get road-cleaning snow-plows out fast enough. Of course, we rarely get that kind of snow, so it doesn't really matter.

Live in Minnesota. Or Minnesnowta rather. We get a shit load of snow up here, but do they cancel school? Nah, why would a blizzard that brought down 20 inches of the damn stuff be cause for worry? Sure, every school district around us closed, but not ours, no not ours, because our superintendent is. a. douche.

New Jersey. We can get a lot of snow, but never constantly enough to raise our standards for what is "too much". About a foot and a half or so, depending on how icy it is and other factors, can been enough.

Again you probably all know of the blizzard from last year. As for the day to day we normally close at the last second and usually its more about it being too cold rather then snow.

I live in Saskatchewan. Literaly, the only times any school is canceled is when there is a garuntee that you would not make it there for the entire day (that is a full blast blizzard lasting all night and all day), or if there is no way you could make it there alive. I remember my elementary school, "40 below, so wear two pairs of snowpants."

EDIT: For the record, my elementary and high schools never had a snow day, if busses couldn't make it, you were encouraged to walk.

I live in Edmonton. We just had a ton of snow. The only thing that changed was that bus drivers now have an excuse to be late. Which means they are even later than usual. I don't even know what they do. It's obviously not napping, because they're always in such bad moods. Then again, maybe they're permanently pissed because they are bus drivers.

So yeah. Not much different.
