Oldboy remake. Yes, this is going to be news as well as a damned rant.

Stephen Spielberg and Will Smith are 'moving forward' to remake Chan-Wook Park's Oldboy, responsible for this awesome fight scene.

But basically the legal issues are the remake rights to the story. It's between Futabasha, the ones who published the manga, and Show East, the film production company, who have been reported to be bankrupt and 'unreachable'. But either way, Spielberg and Smith are remaking the film for mainstream American consumption.

Am I the only person who thinks 'dear god, you're going to fuck this up so badly'? Oldboy was twisted, this remake will either be (in my opinion) a horribly watered down piece of garbage, or a horribly formulaic piece of garbage that bares little resemblance to the original material.

I know I'm probably overreacting, but has Hollywood become so damned stale that they have to remake eastern works into their own? I'm not going to say it is defintely going to be garbage, it could be good. The Departed was amazing, and that's a remake of Infernal Affairs [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infernal_Affairs]. But I can't see this being good, and it irritates me that for some reason this has to be remade.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Is anyone seeing the video? It won't show up, and my computer in general is making me violent.

Speilberg is out of ideas, why do you think his last couple of movies have been remakes of his old films?

No excuse to go and butcher (not in a negative sense, in a remake sense) other people's works. They are also going to do a shot by shot remake of Lady Vengeance. Not Spielberg I don't think, but someone is.

I'm surprised that with the remakes of good Asian movies they've done so far, that they haven't gone for the best one yet, Seven Samurai.

Never heard of the movie before, awesome fight scene though! And as for my opinion, I think there's no need for any movie to be remade.

in fairness, the remake of the ring was pretty good, but that's only because it was directed by the same guy.
spielberg and smith are totally wrong for this film, they're both too normal and nice and mainstream. you need someone a bit leftfield to be able to pull this film off, possibly a darren aronofsky or someone like him.

That was pretty awesome. I don't see why it has to be "re-made" though: why not release it here with the subs? That's totally fine by me...

That appears to be something that doesn't have enough footing in cinema though isn't it? They claim that World Cinema is a niche market, yet the same damned concepts are being done only in English. I just think people are too lazy to read a 'chinese film'.

If world cinema is a niche market, then so are books. You know, those pages with letters on them that move slower than the television box. It seems it's mostly the same kind of people that hate subtitles that also have problems with reading because movies and TV shows are "faster".

People who are too lazy to read subtitles annoy me to no end.

That would appear to be the same factor that has killed many an anime: some people just can't be bothered to try reading subtitles. I can read the damn things on an AIRPLANE TV SCREEN, so don't ***** to me about them being hard to read: they're not. Hell, AMERICAN subtitles falsh by at a faster pace than foreign ones half the time.

I think you mean The Grudge, those versions had the same director. The American Ring was directed by Gore Verbinski, and Ringu was directed by Hideo Nakata.

Spielberg also has a bunch of other things that he is working on too, so it may be a while before this comes out. Plus, I have heard about this for years and nothing has happened up until this point, so it just may never happen. Lets hope so at least, they would be destroying one of my favorite movies ever and they already did that to Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

I can understand people wanting to remake movies that are a few decades old to "update" them for modern audiences and all, but that doesn't look even remotely old. I'm in agreement; bring it over here with some subtitles and let's have at it!

I love Oldboy, but I'm hardly going to get angry over this.

If Spielberg feels like he can make a better adaptation of the manga (which is missing the infamous live octupus eating scene and final plot twist) than Park did, then he can be my guest. If it turns out bad, it'll be just another crappy american remake of an asian movie/film in which Will Smith tries to convince us that he can be a serious actor, if it turns out good, then hoorah. Either way, it won't tarnish the fond memories I have of the original.

Hollywood's been remaking stuff for years, and a lot of times, the result is pretty good.
