I don't even see how a Spielberg/Smith combo could pull Oldboy off, and I love both of them. Plus I don't see the content of the film really flying with a mainstream Western audience. The whole incest theme throughout the film would be a bit hard to stomach for some I think. On top of that I don't see Will Smith eating a bunch of live squid to pull off a scene...

Which means it's more than likely they will dumb it down or cut some of the content that made the film what it was, which is just irritating.

Well, Spielberg isn't the worst director they could get. Imagine if it were Michael Bay, or worse, Uwe Boll.

Though it would be interesting to see what someone like Christopher Nolan could do with Oldboy

They should leave the movie as is... but Will Smith is helping... Ehh, I'm cautiously optimistic for the movie.

I remember finding that film when it was on TV by channel flicking. It was fucked up and mental, but god damn awesome. Will Smith is, in my opinion, bland and not particularly awesome. Plus Hollywood in general is too plain for an idea as messed as that film. I'm not looking forward to the remake, but now that I know the film's called Oldboy, I can look out for the original on DVD somewhere.
