I don't mean to offend anyone but I thought about reading it, but the idea of homosexual vampires isn't very appealing.
You should really read everything every written by Anne Rice. Preferably as quickly as possible.

All good vampires are bi. And not fucking sparkly.
yeah, anyone complaining that Twilight broke vampires by making them metrosexual...

Anne Rice, the queen of vampire books, wrote some seriously fucked up shit regarding the sexuality of vampires.

The books have no depth. Many people find them fun to read, but you'll find it difficult to find someone who will say that it makes them think.

There are three horrible parts about the Twilight franchise.
1. The Vampire concept - It was horrible and I honestly hope other authors don't use similar concepts to define a vampire.
2. The Fans - Ok you enjoyed it. But honestly, it wasn't that amazing, comparisons to other novels that have gotten the title of classic is unfounded and ignorant. Also these people are crazy, i.e. shooting bashers with flareguns, acid on the bashers face.
3. The Bashers - We get it, you don't like Twilight, it wasn't that amazing. If you give fans their space eventually will lose momentum and the hype will die down.

My own opinion on it was that it was a brilliant success, it successfully provided the targetted audience (girls 13-25) with enough of a story to thrown in all of their favourite ideas into one novel. Although I don't like it personally

Congrats Stephanie Meyer

As I've said, all books have their place. Twilight has generally missed its mark by being in the hands of impressionable 13-year-old girls.
Of course, your mother is likely not teen-aged, so I have no qualms with her enjoying it. Perhaps you could use that as a segway into your nerdy vampire-related interests.

Hmm...I absolutely hated the movie, since it seemed to me that one of the only two emotions Bella's supposed to have, Kristen Stewart never shows. The The book, surprisingly, has about two chapters I enjoy, wherein actual...anything is shown. The rest is just some fairy tale, with dumb, unlikeable characters. The second book is garbage. I have not read the third or fourth, and don't plan on it.

Of course, I lie outside the core demographic of rabid fandom; that is to say I'm not a 12-year-old girl.

That's pretty well all I have to say. Doubt you'll find any value in it, but try the first book. Then hurl it into the sun.
