Walkthroughs are cheating?

I use walkthroughs, yes. But not for games i truly play to enjoy the fullness of it. Mass effect for example, never looked at a guide for it. Assassin's creed? Yes i did, mainly cause i was playing for the story. Also if someone spoils a game for me i might as well use a walkthrough, since it was already spoiled. I may feel a bit guilty, sure but it's my enjoyment in the end, i choose how to experience my fun, if i may use a guiding hand for it, so what?

I use walkthroughs first time in JRPG's only. Too many of them love to hide half the cast and most of the decent gear in areas and situations most people wouldnt even know exist let alone be able to find (when you first enter the town go to the market and talk to the old man before you save at the inn etc TriAce i am so looking at you right now). When that means i'm losing a good % of my enjoyment of the game (Final Fantasy X2 was too boring to complete more than once for me and no way would i have gotten the proper ending without cheating).

For the most part, yes, it is a mild form of cheating.

But in adventure games or puzzle games, it is most certainly cheating, to the highest degree.

It's cheating alright. Cheating yourself out of the fun of figuring it out on yourself.

I know I regretted a lot of times looking up solutions online.

Depends how you value your gaming experience.

-----

Stuck on a level, boss, timed section, finding collectibles, or advancing the plot in a warranted direction? Use it, to any extent.

Are you still stuck but want to learn from and feel the thrill of discovery and the pangs of creating a course of action? Don't use it.

In terms of value for money, will a walkthrough devalue the price of a product? No, because the experience varies each time you play, and is not dependent on the pricing of the item in question.

Value your time instead because you don't have enough time in your busy schedule to devote to games, but want to advance the plot? Then use a walkthrough to complement the gameplay while keeping the spoilers as far away from you as possible.

-----

No one way to look at it, really. It's your gaming experience, not mine, so go with the flow and do what you wish!

What about games like the Tales series where if you miss even a small part you can miss a really strong weapon or important thing to do. I could just as well travel to every zone in the entire world map and talk to every person but I rather read for 2 minutes and check what I need to do. My point is that it saves time and can save you a lot of trouble. So instead of getting frustrated you can just read a bit and continue your fun game.

You and the guy right below your first post are absolutely right.

If you just need some help getting through a level, then it's fine.
Also some games just require a walkthrough, like Minecraft, where walkthrough are half of the game.

sums up my opinion pretty well. recently i was just stumped for about half an hour on one chamber in portal 2. i looked at the walkthrough, find out the first step (something i just completely missed for some reason) and boom, sorted. i don't see myself as cheating the game, i just needed a little help xD

Everyone knows that for one certain game they used "R1, R2, L1, R2, Up, Down, Left Right, Up, Down Left, Right" and yet that was fine. xD

The walkthrough's are created by the Developers aren't they? It's just a little bit more help that's all, it can help you find collectables an stuff as well, which are sometimes very hard to find.

If i get one, i play the game without looking at it, then my second play through i will take a peek :)

It's difficult when you play adventure games, especially older ones like Broken Sword or Monkey Island, those were pretty difficult at some point or another. The thing about these games is that you might actually find a better way to solve a puzzle, but it doesn't work because there's usually only one way to do it ( the developer's way ). It didn't happen often to me, but when it does it's pretty frustrating and you might get stuck.

It still is cheating I guess, but not in the bad way like cheating when playing multiplayer.

I turn to online walkthroughs when I am faced with my arch enemy, puzzles with no clues to them.

I have thus found walkthroughs essential in my recent misadventures in old school survival horror.

Ofcourse it's cheating, the game was intended for you to figure it out and a walkthrough is bypassing that aspect.
But ofcourse you are only cheating yourself out of the experience, so however you want to do it is your thing.
