Predictable choice from me, considering my avatar, but; Chrono Trigger. If you have a Wii or a DS or something that can play it, go for it. It's not just one of the best jrpgs out there, it ranks as one of the best games of all time.

Final Fantasy VII

You think I'm kidding but I'm not.

Final Fantasy IX fits the bill perfectly as well.

I'm going to disagree about Persona 4, and Disgaia.

See, those are great games, but the first relies very hard on understanding JRPG conventions and the later is a griiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiindfest.

I would recommend them but not until you've cut your teeth a little.

Chrono Trigger is a great start, and from there I'd probably dip into FF4 and 6.

You must have played many RPGs, I think there are more from Japan then from the West. Anyways, if your looking for SRPG, a final fantasy tactics of some type, a more action based RPG, then something like Chrono Trigger, if traditional turn based then FF7 keeps getting peoples' attention, although I'm going to say Dragon warriors/quest and represent! If you were more specific on what type of RPG you like I could be more specific.

Ohhh good question. Personally I would recommend Persona 3 and 4. As for FF games, IV, VI, VII, and X are pretty good. X is my personal favorite. As for VIII, IX, and XIII, I haven't played too much into them yet, but so far so good. XIII story is confusing though.

Edit: Also, Legend of Dragoon deserves an Honorable mention as well.

Chrono Trigger sounds interesting. Its got a certain weird factor to it. If a game can laugh and make fun of itself then that would be perfect. I've been playing a bit of tales of symphonia and while it has its moments the humour comes off as being a bit simple, (I know I know i'm a fussy git) maybe things would change further in.

There are some western made RPGs on the PC that are made JRPG style. The only two I've played are Anachronox and Septerra Core. Anachronox is really zany, but I can't remember how much angst there is. I think the main character is supposed to be a noir-era detective (except in space), so I would guess that he isn't particularly cheery. Overall, the mood of the game is very light and silly, however, and I imagine that if the protagonist is dark and brooding, he was written that way for laughs, rather than in a way that is supposed to be taken seriously. I haven't played the game in so long I really can remember for sure, though.
Anachronox is going to be the best JRPG you will get on the PC, or in any format for that matter. Who cares that it isn't from Japan it is awesome.

Tales of symphonia is a popular one among many people new to JRPGs. Get that for your gamecube/wii (or emulate it if you have a ballin PC)
Seconding this tlike this --------------------------------------------------- much!!
Absolutely marvellous series and fun to play. Plus it is easy to get into.

I've just realized that I've never played a jrpg in my life. This is an intolerable gap in my gaming experience which must be immediately remedied.
SO escapists hit me with your suggestions. Remember I am completely alien to jrpgs (not a big fan of anime either, though I did love the avatar series)

I'll list some stuff I'm looking for in a game I would enjoy:

* No angsty characters. Characters (excluding the villains of course) must be cheerful, especially the protagonist(tragic past is fine as long as he/she doesn't brood)
* Companions are not required but Very welcome, as long as it doesn't get too crowded
* A globe trotting adventure with a well structured narrative
* Gameplay isn't really an issue. I wouldn't mind if it was purely text based like the pokemon games

I really don't want to post any more than that in case I come off as too fussy (I probably do already).

ps. I don't really care if the story or the characters are mature or not, actually the sillier the better. It'd be nice if it was a charming world capable of eliciting a few giggles

Jrpgs on a computer eh? i lke a challenge.

You shouldn't get a emulator, defiently not since it's legal status is iffy. And you shouldn't get a SNES emulator with chrono trigger and FFVI.

I remember Final fantasy 7 is being relaunched soon, otherwise....most of the games i know/have are for the PS1 or PS2, you don't have anything like a "bleem" available do you?

Yes to all! They are really good games and I reckon would be good for a starter step into JRPGs! Have fun :D

Chrono Trigger. Why has this not been said more. The best of the best when it comes to JRPGS imho. Also Earthbound. Why has only one person said Earthbound. For shame on you all. One of the granddaddies of JRPGs with one of the best stories in a JRPG.

I'm gonna have to join in on the Persona push, definitely worth playing them!

Same with the Tales series, personally, Tales of Eternia is a fantastic starting point for anyone!

pps. eh I should have mentioned this earlier. I play on a pc, so unfortunately console and hand helds are out of the picture. Feel dumb for not stating this beforehand.
Final Fantasy is considered by many to be the bread & butter jrpg franchise. I would suggest that you play the game that the original creator considered to be his Magnum Opus - Final Fantasy 9. It sounds like this game would also be right up your alley. It's got a silly world that is half fairy tale, half shakespere, half lord of the rings... it's hard to describe but I guarantee you'll love it. Unfortunately, I don't think it was ever released for PC. But there are [looks to make sure the mods aren't watching] *whishper*playstation emulators*whisper* that you can use. Now I'm TOTALLY NOT SUGGESTING you use them, just alerting you to their availability... But seriously, it's one of the greats from a great (formerly) series.

If you only play one RPG, it would have to be Chrono Trigger. It full fills all the requirements you made (even silly), was design for beginners, and is just a great game by itself.
