A few months old yes, but I think worth discussing.

Now, the key word here is unsolicited. And of course, it's up to the court to decide whether the offence was serious enough to warrant a jail sentence.

Causing a person to see or hear an indecent communication is also an offence. It can be committed by reading "a passage in a book or magazine" or by communicating the sounds of actual or simulated sexual activity or by communicating in sign language.
Sign Language? I'll assume they mean rude gestures? Although, I guess a deaf/speech impaired person could sign something offensive. As for the 'a passage in a book or magazine', what exactly does that mean? I can think of hundreds of examples of content that could be considered offensive in some way, however, I suppose in this instance, what they mean is printing or writing an offensive email or message in such a publication, but, it all sounds so..vague.

Now, I understand, getting an offensive email, or text or whatever, isn't (depending on your disposition it could be hilarious) a nice thing. And, even more so where it's actually threatening. But, I fail to see what sending people to prison for, basically a minor in my opinion thing serves. *shrug* Thoughts?

Wow, ten years for that kind of thing? Damn, you'd figure a fine would be enough.

As a scotsman, yes, yes I do wear kilts.
This little law thats going under the hammer though, its a little bit worrying. If anything the sentance should match that of someone arrested for indecent exposure. Possiblly harrasment as well if they do it several times.

But what if someone is glad to receive them at first, has a large falling out with said person and then uses the texts unfairly to claim harrasment? Its going to be hard to tell if the arrest is warranted or not.

I wear a kilt as a bagpiper, so yes, there are many people still wearing them, even stateside.

The punishment is a little, um, extreme but it will stop people from being vulgar.

You know what angers me about this. Some thug kicked a pensioner to death recently in Scotland and got 13 years. Boy, do we have our priorities right.

i remember getting into a message board arguement with a pretentious swedish girl. she had declared that i committed libel and a hate crime by calling her an "annoying whore". she also stated that what i did could result in a jail sentence.

she had no idea how off kilter or insane such a law seems to other people. a verbal insult is not a literal statement about one's occupation.

just bizarre
