Game wise I think he first popped up in the oh-so-good Knuckles Chaotix [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knuckles_Chaotix]. My first encounter with him was the Sonic the Hedgehog comic magazines I got bought as a child though. He was in Sonic Heroes [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Heroes] on Team Chaotix too. Characters I would like not to see again:
Falco/Wolf: Atleast one of them needs to go. They're both basically Fox clones, and we really don't need two clones of the same character.
Sonic: I've never been a fan of him and I didn't like him in smash.
Rob: Seriously, what the hell?
Pokemon: There are too many of them.
Keep a few as playable characters and let the rest be pokeball items.
Keep the pokemon trainer though, I loved playing him.
Lucas: He's basically the same character as Ness and had never heard of him before Smashbros.

Definantly Master Chief & Arbiter and there has been a game boy esque halo game on the internet so they fit in.As for more traditional characters, I'm surprised they haven't made Ridley as a playable character yet. It would be awesome they put in the Metroid Queen and the Metroid Prime/Dark Samus with a transforming ability (like Zelda/Shiek). I'm apalled to see nobody has said we should have Grey Fox as a playable character, I honestly think he's way better than Snake. They should also have Optimus Prime, just because.
