I feel sorry for the Warcraft fans. I was never a fan of the MMO, but I wasn't surprised looking at the trailer. The only movie I am looking forward to is TMNT: Out of the Shadows. That looks fun, it comes out next week,.
Don't. I've been playing Warcraft since Warcraft. I played on a little LAN with my friends, and we did the same with WC2. I played WoW from the time it came out, for about 2 years and just didn't have time for an MMO anymore. At no point did I, or anyone I ever met who liked Warcraft ever say, "I wish we had a movie of this shit!" It was just goofy fun, click on a sheep until it exploded fun, amazing looking cutscene (for the time) fun.

Now you have these poor, broken uberfans who in most cases are too young to remember why Warcraft and Blizzard are so big in the first place. They're not even worth trying to get through to, anymore than some poor bastard who lives and dies for 'wrastling'.
Alright, I understand.

I can attest that I, personally, would have loved to see a Warcraft III movie back in the day. WC1 & 2, not so much, considering how sparse their stories were.

As previous threads have shown, I've reversed my outlook - WC1 & 2 seem to be better candidates for movies, in that while they have the outline of a story, it's pretty much carte blanche as to how an adaptation would approach it, whereas Warcraft III functions fine as a story on its own. It's kind of why Tides of Darkness & Beyond the Dark Portal received novelizations, Orcs and Humans got The Last Guardian, while Warcraft III has never been novelized, bar novel sequences that happen in the book itself (e.g. in Rise of the Lich King).

Rare non-cynical moment for me, but I still remain kinda hopeful about it.

Certainly wouldn't be the first time critics and I disagreed on the quality of a film/game.

So. Eh. Fuck it.

The trailers looked neat and I played a lotta WoW/WC1-3, so I'll see it.

I do seem to remember Pacific Rim getting mediocre reviews (Ebert aside) and I fuckin' adore that movie. So... *shrug*
Pacific Rim ended up at 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, Warcraft is currently sitting at 22%.
I think Pacific Rim is one of those movies that it's so bad it's good. And it was deliberately design as such.

Warcraft though ... they hired Duncan Jones, a guy mainly known for artsy dramas. Like they have delusions of grandeur with regards to their script.

From most of the comments on the film I have read, it's solely being propped up by its VFX (which don't really blend with the live action all that well due to the director's inexperience with VFX shots) and its 160 million budget.

What a shock, the cynical video-game tie-in movie that even die-hard fans couldn't see the point of, is pointless? Next I'll hear that 'Angry birds' was a cash-grab.
According to a tweet from Lindsay Ellis (the Nostalgia Chick) The Angry Birds Movie actually got a rave review from a white supremacist site. So there's that.
Weird... I wonder what part of the movie appealed to them so much?
There's a theory going around the film represents Islamic immigration to Europe. The pigs are well pigs (very insulting in Islam), the leader is bearded, the hero birds are the colours of the German flag, the bird who says the pigs can stay is Merkle etc...

Well it seems now I'll REALLY have to cancel that trip to Germany that I was hoping to have with my dad. Seems the salt will be a bit too high for us to go by without an incident.

Critics hate it. Audiences seem to have a positive reaction. What does this tell us? Guess it's one of those 'must suck because video games' movies.

Same could be said for Fant4stic a couple of weeks out from release. And BvS. And just about any other genre movie where fanboys are going to defend a movie to the death rather than admit that something was made with a property they love that was terrible. There are usually more people defending what an awesome movie it is than there are people that have actually seen the move, at this point.

No, but critics have seen early viewings.

I'm aware, sir.

As I said previously, however, the opinions of those critics, especially with the way they've come at the film, mean less than nothing at this point.

YMMV, but whatever.

That is the exact same argument I used when critics trashed Dawn of Justice, before release.

Good luck to you. Hope you fare better with it on Warcraft then I did on DoJ.

Not sure I understand why a critic's opinion means less than nothing. Because they're not Warcraft fans? Why should that be a prerequisite to enjoy a movie? Because critics don't like fantasy? Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Game of Thrones, etc.

If it makes y'all feel any better, I'm willing to bet it will end up with a higher score than the new Alice movie.

I actually wonder how the "Disney pays off all the critics" folks are going to spin that. Maybe everyone was getting too close to the truth, so they used Alice as a sacrifice to throw people off the scent?

...And?

I'm curious exactly how a Variety article about how Warcraft had a decent foreign opening, but is on track for a merely 'ok' domestic opening, has any bearing on how my opinion that the critics were wrong about Dawn of Justice fell apart Day One, and my well wishes that it's not the same for someone else on a movie they want to see.

Same thing, just random people saying it's awesome after claiming to see an early screening.

Saw that one in theaters after kind of writing it off early due to negative reviews...

Wasn't a planned viewing, as my dad came into town and we were at a loss as to how to entertain ourselves.

Ya know what? It wasn't bad. Not great, by any stretch, and plot points were all over the place, but it certainly wasn't the dumpster fire they'd been proclaiming it to be.

So. Reserving judgment on this until I see it.

See above.

Critics and I don't see eye to eye a lot of the time so I'm not really invested in their view on things.

I'm not saying this'll be God's gift to cinema, but a 22 (currently 29) percent? Of course not.

Hell, that Prince of Persia movie was decent. I don't see how this could be worse.

Not understanding that either. It's not like it did awesome business blowing everyone away, it simply did... not terrible? Another $245 million and it would equal BvS first international weekend.

I'd have appreciated it if you used words to convey that from the start.

As for an opinion... what can I say? It did ok in foreign theaters. It's projected to have ok numbers in the US. So... okay, I guess? There's not much more to say at this point, until regular viewer reviews and box office numbers start coming out and we can comparing them to critic's reviews and projected financial figures.
