Woo-hoo! I finally got into the beta for a game!....that's been out for 3 years. o.o

Anyways, after listening to Total Biscuit rave about the game on his podcast for the past couple of weeks - then watching his "instructional" video on the game - I decided to go ahead and pick it up. So I started playing over the weekend and I think I've got a pretty good feel for it.

First: the "Rate My Gear/Offer Me Suggestions" bit.
I went with Mag as my starter and took the Paris bow for my primary. Since starting, I've managed to build myself some Dual Heat Swords and when I get home from work today my Twin Grakata will be complete!

I've been thinking of pursuing the Attica as for my primary weapon...how does that bugger fair? Also, any tips on what some good weapons would be for a noob like me to pursue here in the early game? Just as an FYI: my playstyle seems to have become rather melee focused.

General Discussion
Just recently started playing and I've gotta say I'm already quite hooked on it. I mean come on...you're a frickin' space ninja! With magical powers! Think I made a good choice with starting as Mag, I'm really enjoying her kit. Got to do my first Tower mission last night. Gotta say...those Tower tilesets are easily one of the most interesting/beautiful/amazing indoor 3D environments I've ever explored. And the background music for the Towers...seriously, the entire time I was going through that place I had the boner because everything about it was so frickin' awesome. I now fully understand what Total Biscuit was saying when he said that the majority of appeal from this game stems from the "rule of cool".

I even got to find a secret in the Tower! And I quickly learned that they're actually full of secrets if you look hard enough. All the way towards the top of a chamber with a ridiculously high ceiling I saw a series of shuttered windows...and one was open. I hopped my way up the wall and through the window...sure enough: I found a secret treasure room! I also found another secret area...though there wasn't much to it other than a loop of chambers. It almost seemed like an obstacle course of some kind because there weren't any enemies, but rather a whole bunch of traps.

That and the music completely shifted when I got to the "start of the course"...which was jumping down a huge shaft filled with lasers in a grid pattern. Wandered around for a bit, eventually made it into this big air shaft that shot me up into another huge chamber that eventually led me back to the room with the laser-grid pit. The entire this fast-tempo purely drums beat was playing.

Anyone find something similar to this? Anyone happen to know what it's all about? Or was it just a random series of rooms that I came across?

On the gear front, for a primary, Tonkor.
Tonkor Tonkor Tonkor Tonkor Tonkor.
TONKOR.

Buy and build that thing ASAP, it's pretty much GG if you mod it decently.

As for other gear, mix and match, try it all out (So you can get a higher mastery ranking which unlocks more shit) and join a clan if you can. Clan's offer more weaponry for a bit more in game money, but you can build it with a little bit of hard work and grind. Most clans I've heard about are pretty casual as well, which is cool in a mostly PvE game.

Personally at the moment, I'm levelling an Ember warframe, using the Tonkor (Tonkor is bae) as a primary, Ballistica as a secondary and Kronen as my melee, just levelling them up and trying to gather the resources I need to make the Nekros warframe. The game is oddly addicting despite having a barely there story and being incredibly grindy at times.

As for the fast beating drums in the secret room, it's actually a time trail to get to the end of the rooms to grab some loot I believe. Check out VOid secret rooms on YT and you'll probably see what you'll have to do.

EDIT: Oh, also for early game weapons, Orthos and Galatine are bae. Orthos is a nice "Fuck everything that gets near me" melee and Galatine, while slow, hits a huge radius and is a good mob clearer.

I get the feeling you're trying to tell me something here...just not sure what. :p

I need to make the Nekros warframe. The game is oddly addicting despite having a barely there story and being incredibly grindy at times.
I've got my eye on the Nekros as well...certainly seems like it'd be fun to not only be a space ninja, but a space ninja necromancer!

And yeah, while I certainly realize this game came out before MGS5, it has what I've come to call "MGS5 Appeal". That is where a game has little to no story, but god damn if the gameplay itself isn't addicting enough to make you keep coming back for more.

Thanks for the advice on weapons, too. I'll look into picking them up. Do you have any opinion on that Attica crossbow I mentioned in my OP?

I haven't used it, to be honest. I've got the blueprint but I've not been too interested in building it. I probably will get around to it at some point but right now, I'm just leaving the Tonkor on to help level newer weapons. However the Ballistica, its secondary cousin, is OKish. Definitely a weapon for stealth builds.

If i had 5 plat for every MR6 player i saw running around with thier shiny new Tonkor last week id have enough plat to buy a shiny new Tonkor.

Attica is a mediocre weapon overall, it is however the best weapon for using the Thunderbolt mod, which isnt saying much really.

It really is a game about exploring what you like when it comes to weaponry. You'll find a lot of elitism when it comes to the game, and a lot of people pick the same boring weapons over and over again. Soma, Boltor Prime; it's for people who just want to hold down a button for 2K hours and beat a game - when really, you only need weapons like that if you plan to brute force Sorties (which is entirely possible but quite stupid). The nice thing about Warframe is that if you REALLY love a weapon / Frame, you can use enough Formas on it to compete with the low end of the top-tier stuff. It wouldn't be a total stretch to say an 6 Forma'd Lato could be a viable weapon for a large majority of the game.

Mag is a great frame actually, and while nowhere near as strong as Excalibur or versatile as Volt, at the end-game she's probably the best crowd control frame, and by far the best frame against Corpus. But, I imagine by the time you get to end-game, you'll have that Nekros you want (who is another awesome utility frame). Go figure.

Attica, I also couldn't comment on. You don't see it used much. Not sure if it's just 'boring', or just 'sucks', or just nobody thinks of it. No idea.

I think, if you're starting out, try to start by saving money. Mods get STUPIDLY expensive near the end-game. The Aklex and the Boar are both superb early-game weapons, and I can't recommend them more. For melee weapons, I still own my Dual Heat Sword, they're actually that good.

Decent enough list, but you really should have pointed out the Syndicate weapons MR rank. Cause those aren't something a new player is just gonna, 'get' ya know.

and Broken War, really? 'the only melee weapon you'll need'. Yeah, unless they don't like one handed swords. There are a lot of other good melee weapons out there, and with the Blood Rush/Body Count mods out there now, there's really no need to tell him 'get this sword, cause it's OP'

As a MR21 Master Founder (bow to me, lowly peasants!), I can safely say: Until you're at 'endgame', play what you like the feel of the most. Any weapons can take you through the solar system.

As for my own preferences:

Primary Rifle: Braton/Prime or Soma/Prime, depending on if I need elemental or crit damage.
Primary Shotgun: (Vaykor)/ Hek, or the Kohm.
Secondary: (Vaykor)/Marelok, Furis, Bolto.
Melee: Orthos/Prime, Destrezsa, Scindo/Prime or Tipedo.

I don't recall which of these are MR-locked, mea culpa.

As far as Warframes are concerned: Of the starters, Excalibur is easily the best. His fairly-recent rework makes him phenomenal. Luckily, Mag and Volt are up for a review and should be reworked 'Soon'. So likely in a few months.

Oh no my friend, oh no. Are we forgetting about Nyx? Blind Excalibur? Hell, a Stomp Rhino. Sure, Mag's Crusg might CC when you augment it, but even then it's a mod slot you could use on something else, if you were using a different frame.

If your Melee focused you should look into Rhino [http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Rhino], Valkyr [http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyr] or Chroma [http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Chroma] as all 3 are basically the 'tanks', and it's highly likely you already have some of Rhino, though personally, I would point you toward Valkyr or Chroma.

As for the Attica, it's not bad, it's mostly Puncture Damage which, in my experience is a good 'all round' Damage type to have your weapons dulling out, it's an MR 4 weapon though, so keep that in mind. ( donno what your MR is so just putting that out there.) but assuming you ARE MR4, you also have access to the Redeemer [http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Redeemer]. which gotta buff to its charge speed recently making it one of the better Shotguns in the game. It's kind of 'meh' as a melee weapon though, but it's over all a very solid weapon. plus, it's 'silent' like the bows and has no limit to the Shotgun Ammo, so go nuts.

other then that, you'll REALLY wanna focus on building up your mod collection, and since you like Melee, Steel Fiber and Rage should be on your short list, a long with Stream Line and Flow, for Melee though, it really depends on the weapon, so you'll wanna pay attention to the Status and Crit Chances and mod accordingly, BUT Body Count(at max rank extends your Combo durration to a totaly of 15 seconds, from the base 3 seconds) and Blood Rush (at max rank 165% Crit Chance per combo meter 'tier'. so at tier 2, which is x2 damage you would have a crit chance boost of 330%, up to 990% at x4 damage) should be a priority, as both, together, on a tanky Frame, will allow you to do some absurd damage.

other then that, join a clan cause there's a lot of goodies you can only get through Clan Tech. Plus, ya know, people to, in theory, help you do stuff. (my clan is kinda useless in this regard but *shrugs*)

And here I considered myself lucky to get my hands on one Forma to build my Twin Grakata. Gotta say I'm liking them so far, but god damn do they burn through ammo like it's going out of style.

Mods get STUPIDLY expensive near the end-game.
I take that as meaning there's a place where I can go to buy mods for credits? If so, could you point me in its direction? I've been farming Corpus excavations for Swirling Tiger stance, but I haven't had any luck yet.

Edit: Ty for all the other tips, too.

Not really, but you know if you take one unranked mod and slap another into it you get a full level, with diminishing returns the farther along the ranks you go(but much moreso than if you used random mods), it becomes easier because the way the system is set up is just your standard "more junk fused = more credits required". You get towards the last few ranks of required mods like Serration and Hornet, and you start getting upwards of 50k credits to get that next rank even if you fuse I think something like fifteen mods there.

Also, Attica's alright, but if you plan on using the Paris or Paris Prime, you honestly probably want something else. You can use them is you want to, but the general rule of thumb is to keep a mix of physical damage types or at least have a weapon variety that lets you cover your weaknesses. Bows are damn good at single target and enemies somewhat lining up(three formas and a catalyst on my Paris Prime, I'm doing something like 10k crits through most cover and it's nowhere near where I want it to be), but sorta shit if you're getting mobbed. And as Mag you sorta start having power or shield problems if you're going solo the further into the game you get.

As for your obstacle courses on Void missions, they're something that appears there sometimes. You step on the plate and if you get to the treasure room in time, you can get something like 2-5 mods from a pretty good pool I'd say. Otherwise you just get a load of credits.

Also, quick tip, if you can't do solo survival for whatever reason, the best affinity grind I've found is Spy missions. Don't hit the alarms and you can easily get something from unranked to 10 in like two runs. Especially if you get an affinity booster.

Honestly im not much of a melee user. Melee just doesnt justify the risks of having to close the distance with the the victim when guns do far, far more damage and dont put you close proximity if things like Bombards.

Also i guess im still salty about what they did to thrown melee weapons.

Well for a cheesy as cheese gets combo you need Sonicor / Tonkor, especially Sonicor.
For some odd reason that weapon works as a shotgun, rocket launcher, and grenade launcher in one, but never damages you unlike other explosive types (damn you Penta!). I'm not sure if Sonicor is bugged but it has a massive hitbox, even bigger splash range, the projectile bounces all over the place, even without multishot it might hit enemies multiple times and enemies are knocked down/go flying which disarms them immediately. By it's base stats it shouldn't be doing any of this, yet somehow it does, so get it while you can.
Be warned, once you mod it up that makes the game supper boring because everything instantly dies or gets stuffed into a corner where you just keep hammering the poor buggers.

For melee I use a Galatine because it's a 10 foot sword, so if you do a spin attack that is a 20 foot area of damage (probably not exactly, but let's say it's close). It is also a heavy weapon, meaning a slam attack knocks everyone down, so in a pinch you can use it to just stun lock your enemies which even works on smaller bosses.
And Frost is my main warframe right now since I end up doing plenty of solo missions at high level where they get quite risky, but the shield you get with frost can turn damn near all missions into a winner as long as you bring energy packs.

P.S. If you are a new player the first thing to learn is a traverse combo which will fling you across the map like crazy, especially needed for high level stuff when you run out of options.
What you do is floor slide -> jump into bullet spin -> second jump at the end -> aim glide as far as it will take you -> land with a floor slide so you don't stagger, and then you can repeat the process.
Also statistically the highest chance of Forma drops are Void Survival 2 missions, but for some reason most people get them with Void Mobile Defense 3.

I'm not hearing a whole lot of love for the Tonbo in the melee department. Seriously, the tonbo is like the orthos on super speed. And if you're a melee player I have only 1 thing to say; Valkyr. Honestly, 70%+ damage reduction AS STANDARD makes melee a breeze. You can easily wade into hordes of anything and come out the other side covered in gore and that's BEFORE you activate her invulnerable, life stealing powers.

But yeah, as others have said, other great weapons include Soma/Soma prime, Tonkor, Sonicor, Galatine, Hek, almost any syndicate weapon of which Synoid Simulor is king, among many others.

Mag is a great frame, useful in corpus sorties all the way up to level 100 enemies. Also get Ember for infested and any exterminate mission, Nova, Loki, Vauban, Nyx and Valkyr are all my go to frames for pretty much any situation.

I was there when Warframe was in beta. It changed a whole lot from those days.

My one issue with the game... since the parkour update, my favorite warframe Zephyr has become entirely useless....

You are kidding right?

She is the only frame apart from Valkyr who is pretty much immortal (from ranged weaponry) if you have turbulence with maxed stretch. Nothing can touch you, nothing, unless it gets in melee range where you can erase it with your own melee power.

play her as a tank, as surprisingly that is what she is good at.

Myself, I love Nyx Prime. :)

To answer the OP question, all weapons in this game are good, shove in some forma's and you can make them badass. There are literally a handful of weapons that are not as good but still decent.

I tried playing it for a bit, but its loading times were killer and I could never find a good partner
