The last time I played was 3rd ed, that was the one when they introduced the rapid fire rules and such plus changed melee to be like fantasy right?

Out of curiosity, what is different between that and 6th?

Yeah, I am an absolutely massive Warhammer 40k and Warhammer fantasy battle fan, but I will never end up playing the tabletop, which is a true shame. Its a hobby, yet for some reason, it costs more for a single unit than most full priced games sometimes. Heck, even the mod Call of Warhammer for Medieval II offers a beutiful Warhammer experiance, and its free!

For small figures you have to do all the work yourself on, the price is truely obscene, and honestly will end up killing the hobby. HeroScape is cheaper, and all of its units are already entirely made and the huge starter pack is only like 40 dollars, the price of a single undead hero!

Games Workshop has truely no buisness sense, not a single kid, no matter how inlove with the universe they are, will EVER pay the 400 dollars or so it costs to set up a single army that could hold its own when in theses days, they could buy Skyrim, a nice FPS, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and maybe even one more game on top of that!

I dropped the hobby a long time ago and haven't given a cent to Games Workshop since. They can take their ludicrously high prices and fuck right off. No doubt they are already losing business and further price hikes are but another nail in the long overdue coffin.

Back in my day starter boxes were £50, Codexes were £12 and paints were £1.25.

Those were the days...

Way too expensive for me to get back into the modelling now, I'll just keep reading the fluff

I wonder which armies the new box will feature. Space Marines obviously, and...?

I buy ocassionally when I'm feeling rich, and might take a new edition as time to get back into it properly. That said, the only thing I'm really waiting to see is to ensure the Sisters of Battle make it in. They've been the most neglected army for years, and always seem just one step from going the way of the Squats...

Been thinking of buying Assault on Black Reach for a while now. I guess it's hopeless to expect some sort of price cut before the next set comes out...

Is it true that the next one will have Blood Angels and Chaos Space Marines?

I decided that Games Workshop could take a running jump YEARS ago. The price of everything they sell has been far too high for a long time now. I've heard that they've been having a bit of financial difficulty recently. Perhaps this latest ridiculous price hike will be the final nail in their coffin.

I've been tempted multiple times to start the hobby, as I love the lore and universe, but despite all the other reasons I end up not doing it, not having the time to invest in painting the models and playing what may be a lengthy game, hating the smell of paint, the fear that I'd never get my head around the rules, and that my nerd rating is far past the tolerance levels of most girls already, the cheif concern I always have, that always stops me getting into it, is the price. Having to pay like 50+ quid just to start, and then probably wanting to move on to expansion packs that may be verging on a hundred quid, is a mind boggling amount of money for me to have to spend, especially as I'm unemployed, and living in recession britain, probably will be for quite some time.

So yeah, from the point of view of an outsider who considers playing, raising the prices higher is a terrible idea.
Like the other guy said, Dark Heresy or Deathwatch games are where it's at for budget players, however, I'd also like to mention Kill Team. Small scale objective based games where one player controls a team of super troopers fighting against the opponent's guards.

It allows for cheaper play, since you can get away with using a single box of troops rather than an entire army, and it encourages creativity. So you can customize the hell out of your models and really make a unique set of minis.

As long as Matt Ward is not involved in any way I can deal with it.
Amen. Only good things can happen if he leaves.
Do not worry my friends. One day Rick Pristley will dessent from the havens, with Andy Chamber ,Gavin Thorpe and Alessio Cavatore at his side, and smite the pretender to the Golden throne with the Codex Imperialis.
I'm sorry, Gav Thorpe? Gav 'Let no good deed go unpunished! Let no evil deed go unrewarded!' Thorpe? Gav 'Less Is More' Thorpe? Who completely gutted Codex:CSM? And while Andy Chambers shall forever remain the Overfiend, he is the guy who came up with the whole 'C'tan are responsible for everything everrrrr' schtick, which was...less than optimal.

I'll give you Cavatore though, mainly because his VC army book was really good and you'll hear no argument from me on Priestley.

Anyway, Matt Ward leaving isn't going to help, since that'd leave Phil Kelly and Robin Crudacce as sole designers. One of those can only write Eldar and will turn any non-eldar army he has to write into pseudo-eldar (see: orks) and the other one will make any army he likes op and destroy any army he doesn't like (see: IG/Tyranids).

Really?

I love some of the fluff and the sheer potential for great stories and characters that the 40k world has. The actual models are generally good quality. But...
EIGHTY quid for the mehrines box? The fuck? Their grasp of the market is clearly shite. I see loads of people saying they'd get into it if it wasn't so damned expensive. It would make sense for them to drop the prices... as far as I understand it, you make more money from a dozen people paying you £1 per little plastic dude than you do from one guy paying you £5 for a little plastic dude. But maybe my maths is wrong.
