Warhammer 40k. Help a beginner.

Buy a few books and play a few games at a local store (or with friends if they play) before you commit.

No store nearby for me to try things out at. I am hoping I can convince one of my friends to start with me, though without a store nearby that would sell I will most likely need to commit and order online, at least enough to get a game or two going.

Ask around and you will definately find someone in your area that plays
most plyers are happy to help others and vs/give you tips on how to start

Imperial Guard win with numbers I think so its probably the most expensive race. (I'm just basing this off Dawn of War, I never played tabletop)

i get the joke. i just wanted it to be clear no necrons for me.

I think space marines are kind of lame because... well, everyone plays them
If you're going to do marines, at least don't play Ultramarines

IMO I'd read up on the lore for various races and pick ones you like.

A word of warning, Necrons and Dark Eldar are totally outdated right now. I have a necron army and I love the little guys, but GW really needs to get off their asses and give us a new codex.
