I bought it on a whim last night, noticed today that I'd been granted access to the Demo. Woot!

Well, let me tell you: I've been hunting 40k immersion for some time; DoW is nice, but it lacks... impact... the boil of flesh under las bolt; the splash of gore as chainsword rends bone... Dawn of War and its siblings are too clean... too antiseptic; the camera too far from the action. I also found the writing a little... off-- yeah, the marines were gruff, arrogant, pious, and oblivious to the machinations of the eldar-- but it just didn't seem to match the fiction. TOO gruff. Too oblivious. Inhuman, but not inhuman in the awesome space marine way. So I hoped, and hoped, and hoped for Space Marine for some REAL warhammer action. An entertainment title that would match my mind's eye.

I honestly expected much of the same blandness from Space Marine. Wasn't particularly optimistic-- but thrilled to pay cash money for the brand. Anything for more warhammer 40k, right? I mean, I bought that godawful ultramarines cartoon (its got the pacing of a geriatric cock fight), so I might as well enjoy me some warhammer action, insipid though it may be.

So anyway, I fired up the demo, hopped into the action, and felt a tingle in my toes. My toes. They tingled. Just walking down a gantry felt right-- not some airy sprite spouting fealty to the god emperor and animating along a path-- it had weight. Chunk chunk chunk chunk of the ceramite, yet BLINDINGLY fast at the same time-- chunked the space bar and I just ROLLED with the fury of an armored steamroller strapped to an ATLAS rocket.

Where was I? Oh yes. We're on a Forge world. Ok. Cool. Neato. Skies are the expected ugliness marred by millenia of industrialization, scrap metal accents here and there. Mosey on over WOAH. SERVO SKULL. Nice. So cute!!!11! It goes all R2D2 on me-- blah blah blah, the inquisition is in another castle, sweet tiddies. Around the bend, over the hill, through the door, orks. Tons of orks. Oh my god, I have no idea how to shoot, but left click and pop pop pop goes the bolter. Hm, doesn't really feel like a bolter, aren't bolters supposed be semi-automatic rocket propelled grenades? Hm, -- mousewheel -- oh, theres multiple weapons, whats this one HOLY FUCKING SHIT THAT ORK JUST DISSAPEARDEDEDED INTO A CLOUD OF GIBBS. Ok. Ok. Nice. Now I'm surrounded, lets see what right click does HOLY SHIT CHAINSWORD VRZOOOM SMASH VROOSH POP. Periodically the action slowed down, mostly to give my eyes a chance to see the gore perfectly splattered on my armor as I sheared the various vitals of ork physiology.

In an era of samey shooters with chest-high walls and regenerating health (thats probably an exact quote from the resident yahtzee), Space marine is different. Remember, a space marine IS a chest high wall-- when the Astartes lower themselves to operating alongside the imperial guard, the guard use THEM as cover. Health regenerates, but it regenerates through action. And this is critical. I was operating on easy for my first run through, so it seemed like occasionally I would choose enemies for a health snack. I can certainly see how in the midst of a major skirmish, stunning and execution for the rage and health bonuses becomes a large part of the choreography of the fight-- the little orks arent much of a threat, but a Nob is a pretty serious opponent, especially in pairs or triplets-- I found myself doing a little running and gunning when the power axe wasn't cutting it. Combat was very nice, and the animations were varied enough that I didn't feel immediately that I'd done the same move 30 times.

The fun increased steadily from here. As near as I can tell, Space Marine is PITCH PERFECT 40k. I havn't heard much dialog, but what I have heard is excellent, from Imperial Guard captian Antioch stumbling over his words when he realizes he's on the vox with an Astartes-- "yes sir, er, that is, my lord," to the guttural howl of an ork's "WAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!"

Oh, and strapping on the assault pack just makes you feel invincible I was rather dreading it, but the assault jump is so impressive, and the tactical advantages gained from this mobility so amazing... I began to find myself just jumping up and down... just to smash that single enemy that still standing.

I am very happy with my purchase. This game resonates... it will match the harmonic frequency of your brain, which will shake itself apart in no time. Before long you too will be a pious, brooding warmonger, and you too will know only war. I'm thrilled-- try the demo when it hits the public on the 23rd-- and try to tell me its not awesome. You are a god of war. I never cared for the god of war series, which felt more like diablo with combos than anything else, but this, this is visceral. And I like it.

In the grim dark future, there is only war.

I am a War40k fiction fanatic, but Space Marine-- this is a five star piece of perfection right here. Not just because its 40k-- its fun too. Try it.

Really? This seems like it was destined to be completely average. I guess I'll have to try it out. Downloading it right now.

EDIT: Oh, you have to preorder it. Too bad I'm saving up for the dozens of other games coming out.

I'm surprised to see such good impressions... it doesn't look special to me. I don't know anything about Warhammer 40K though. Still, I'll check out the demo when it's made public.

Oooohhh, hadn't heard they'd be putting out a demo. Thanks for the heads-up, thiosk - this sounds like the wait for this game was well worth it. (And I need some cheering up right now, after the crushing disappointment that is the PC version of From Dust.)
To anyone getting this game on the 360: See you on the battlefield! >:D

And there I was sold. Pre-ordering now.

Oh holy Emperor, this makes me happy. And further reinforces the notion that Relic has never produced a bad game, even outside their genre of choice. I'm buying this as soon as I'm able.

I'll be waiting for the 23rd when I can try the demo. Maybe after I check it out I'll be gainfully employed again and can purchase it...

I preordered it on a whim off the strength of the Dawn of War series... and well... huge WH fan. I knew beforehand that this was going to be a shooter/melee hybrid but one that looked more focussed towards a console.

I was surprised to find I got Darksiders FREE AND the Demo!

I downloaded Darksiders to kill time until release and played that while the demo was downloading. Once I fired up the Demo and started playing, my weak expectations were shattered. It plays beautifull and I got to compare it with Darksiders, by all accounts, a very smooth and functional game. While I found the range and melee combat in Darksiders did not fit well and were clumsy, Space Marines proved to have the far superior system. The switch between range and melee is seamless and natural.

What really got my attention was the melee. The melee is simple but it's every bit as good looking as any triple A action title and the mouselook was smooth as butter, allowing you to live as a whirlwind of chainsword death. One moment getting some gunning in and in a split second puling out the chainsword was just... immersive and impressive. With the number of mobs coming at you, you HAVE to melee. I found myself using range to pick off snipers and soften enemies on incoming and resorting to melee for the majority of the mobs as they closed in.

Ork Nobs, even on easy, will skull*&%^% you hard! Later you get 2 of them on you plus 20 assorted orks. They live up to their status and while they are relatively easy to kill, a few hits from them is going to send you to a quick death. With the other boyz trying to swarm you, it is quite a good challenge.

Of particular delight is how easy the controls are. You can tell this was designed for a console/gamepad, but they successfully made this keyboard/mouse usable; unlike many, many games. Having just come off finishign Witcher 2 and 3/4 through Darksiders, Space Marines control just seem so far superior even on default settings.

For some reason, at the bottom of my heart, i knew they would get it right.
So far, i have heard nothing negative about it. ((And this is coming from someone whos followed this game every step from development))

Im glad to see its living up to the REAL 40k name. Sure, the Dawn of War series were nice, but they weren't able to "hit the nail on the head". They made Space Marines feel more robot then man. DoW2 was a bit better about it, actually giving them all different personalities, but then it felt to leisurely.

I also watched the multiplayer customization demo a dozen times. The one feature i was ready to beg for, they added in.

Im looking forward to the demo.(complete understatement)

I was worried I'd be getting bored with it early on, you know how it is with slashers. I'm pleased to report that I'm having more fun playing the same damn missions over and over again than I was when I first started (especially now that I understand how FURY and grenades work).

I still have no idea when the demo is supposed to be available to Australians. I'm guessing the 23rd was just a US date.

You know, I was going to post a big thing here with all of my impressions of the Space Marine demo, but then I thought:

"What does TotalBiscuit think?" So, I went and looked. His opinion is pretty much mine, de facto, to the letter.

Even before he'd left the menus I'd decided that that guy is awesome.

And after watching more of his play through I have to say, this game looks pretty sweet. I hadn't even given it the time of day until hearing about the demo.

I dont know what you have experienced so far but is there any background action? Shit going on around you apart from just ships crashing at preset times? I would just love to see squads of Guardsmen getting butchered by Orks a little off in the distance. You know, like its a actual war zone and not just a linear corridor full of squshies for me to stomp all over.
Not much-- and most did seem scripted. The demo has what looks like a titan's arm hoisted on a crane by the orks in order to blast through a gate. Its a scripted event and you didn't interact with anything except to drop it at the pre-determined time.

Didn't bother me much, though. The orks weren't going to move it further, now that I had liberated them from the burden of having heads.

Who knows whats going on in the rest of the game, i've seen shots of train sequences and all sorts of stuff. Generally, the action seems pretty focused on the immediate zone, so you are somewhat removed from the broader conflict.

The little touches are what did it for me though, walking down a gantry and hearing the trill of an automated announcement "Serve the machine god by joining a corpse removal squad, blah blah blah" made me feel like I really was in a manufactorium.

Well it's a nice review but you seem overly enthusiastic for me to take it seriously, with your love goggles on I can't really see both sides of the coin.

The demo is only a portion of 2 missions. From what we have played, there are no signifcant or noticable negatives with the game. It works well and framerate was exceptional even with hordes of Orks, blood and guts flying everywhere. I mean, literally flying everywhere. The destroyed Ork matter is dense and the game pulls it off very smoothly.

It is, at the end of the day, a shooter. And shooters being shooters, they are generally very simple games. Space Marines is a simple game from what we have seen (essentially only 20 minutes of playtime worth) but much of that simplicity is a result of how easy they made the control system and smooth switching of range/melee using just 2 mouse buttons. A much more "complex" game play could easily have been done here simply by obfuscating the controls like, for instance, Q+L-Shift+A/W + mouseclick (Darksiders). You're not going to find much complexity (from what we have seen). I think, at the end of the day, we're space marines, we're not here to solve puzzles. We're here to buzzsaw the frak out of xenos and heretics <---and that focus is pin point accurate in this game.

The game play won't "WOW" many people, but the execution of the game seems to be perfect. the attention to detail is really quite good and it's visceral. I'm an RPG and MMORPG gamer. I tend to dislike action games. It's very rare for me to like action games. I like this game. It knows what it is and it revels in it and doesn't make excuses nor does it feel contrived. The problem with this particular genre of games is exactly that; contrived, shoddy lore, no attention to detail, exageration to the point of disbelief, oft times seeking to be more than it is when it is not. Space Marines is none of that. It's simple and it knows it.

Truly Epic. Like a mashup of all your favorite Gore laden Titles with the Perfect amount of Cinematic's.
