Word has leaked through the communications array that Streum On Studio - the team responsible for the pretty-rough-yet-kinda-great E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy - is working on a Warhammer 40,000 game based on the Space Hulk board game.

Space Hulk: Deathwing has been revealed through leaked paper documents uploaded to NeoGAF. The game is to be a first person shooter set in the cramped confines of the Space Hulks, with players strapping on the Terminator armour of one of the Emperor?s best Space Marine chapters: the Dark Angels.

The description in the scans explain that players will take on the role of a Librarian. If you?re not familiar with the 40K universe, Librarians are indeed the keepers of books, but books that contain the secrets to mental powers. As a Psyker you?ll be able to blast enemies with mind bullets and tear their brain apart. An RPG-elements system will allow players to spend points in four different skills trees.

As a Space Hulk game, the Marines will of course be facing the Tyranid Genestealers.

Provided this is all true, I?m surprised that another Space Hulk game is on its way so soon after the one that has only just hit Steam. It also doesn't seem to fit the FPS mould well; are not cramped corridor shooters a thing of the 90's? And with the massive war zones of the 40K universe, would a large-scope shooter on the Unreal engine with that superb art style not be something divine? Still, Deathwing could well be the game Aliens: Colonial Marines should have been; a claustrophobic, tense experience with scuttling little bastards jumping out when you least expect them to.

Provided the scans are legit, Space Hulk: Deathwing will be published by Focus next year. We?ll keep you posted on any further developments.

Thanks, VG247.

What do you guys think of this? The Space Hulk game out right now kinda sucks, even if it is a direct adaptation of the Sin of Damnation campaign. This is apparently going to be an all out FPS title. The last time Warhammer 40K tried this, we got the godawful Fire Warrior. But the developer behind it gives me hope that it will be pretty decent.

Now, if only Relic would announce Dawn of War 3 already...

Omg. Tau has always been my favorite race, but I never played Fire Warrior because it was panned so heavily. I just went up to youtube and looked at some videos of it and I think people are being too nice by calling it "godawful". I've seen mods from 6+ years ago leagues better than that. Wow.

Edit: OT: Eh. Don't know how I feel about this. Granted, I haven't played EYE, so this opinion is uninformed, but what I've seen of it wasn't very impressive. It seemed like one of those cult classics we see in movies that is a cult classic because it's kinda bad, but uniquely bad.

Librarian in FPS? I think Tactical Marine or Force commander would be more suitable for that role. But ok.
My problem is that it is a Space Hulk, and if they are gonna follow board game, then the only enemy will be genestealers. That would kinda suck.

Umm, why is the Terminator's paint job yellow? That's the color scheme for the Imperial Fists, not the Dark Angels.

In any event, it's intriguing if true. Giving the player upgradable psyker powers sounds pretty neat. I'm hoping there will be a bit more enemy variety than just purestrain genestealers, though. Maybe throw in some hybrids, a brood lord or two, some frontline Tyranid life forms, etc. Perhaps they could take the player to more than one hulk, each containing different enemies to fight. Space Hulks can hide just about anything, from Ork pirates to Chaos cults biding their time in the Warp, waiting for the perfect moment to strike...

Hmm. That could be interesting, indeed, something in the vein of what aliens CM SHOULD have been. I'll keep my eye on this.

That would suck, but they'd be pretty stupid to do that. Besides, according to 40k fluff, there are plenty of other things that can inhabit a space hulk, like orks, daemons, all kinds of cultists and probably more. So it's not like it wouldn't be lore-friendly.

No, that is the right color. The Deathwing is the name of the Dark Angels elite 1st company, which has off-white, slightly yellowish armor.
That piece of artwork just makes it look more yellow because of lighting.

Not really true. The last time anyone tried this specifically, we got the best horror FPS that has ever been made (edit: this particular mission isn't very tense, but you get the idea).

As a kid, I found this almost impossible to beat.

I cannot, fucking, wait for Deathwing.

Considering Fire Warrior is 10 years old and mods usually start with a good game as a base it's not that surprising, but yes, it wasn't good, at all.

Not necessarily, SH V1 brought in genestealer hybrids, who came with ranged weapons and psychic powers and chaos terminators (as well as power armoured marines).

PS. I assume you all know about Alien "totally not SpaceHulk, honest" Assault? If you want to play Space Hulk (marines only and only single player unfortunately) then it's a faithful adaptation, free and got modded back to "Totally SpaceHulk, and GW's lawyers can fuck off" by the internet pretty sharpish. I'm playing it right now.

Space Hulk, Space Wolf, Armageddon, Eternal Crusade and now this? Games Workshop really is passing around the 40k IP now, aren't they. What I've seen and played of E.Y.E. doesn't make me super hyped that this might be all that amazing but who knows, it may turn out pretty well.

Yay... Another Space Marine game... How about some love for some of the other fans of 40k when it comes to a single focus game.

I'm a big Ork person, but I would take an Eldar based game, or any other races really. It'd be cool to see stuff from a different perspective. I know Fire Warrior was a Tau game and we have the Dawn of War ones that sort of do, but the Space Marines are always the center of every game.

It can't be because "People couldn't relate to a non-imperial character/s" could it? Because none of the humans in any of the games I have played were all that relatable. I liked them, but wouldn't say I saw myself in any of them.

That said, I can agree with this:

I enjoyed Space Marine and would like to see it continue. It was a fun game, and the story, whilst straight forward had an ending that could be used to set up something real interesting.

You might need to adjust the colour settings on ya monitor dude. The terminator is bone white the colour of the DeathWing. I do like your idea of more than one hulk, just genesteallers could get kinda repetitive. :)

Playing as a SM librarian could end up with something similar to bioshock and plasmids I suppose.... perhaps even in the deeper (And never quite explored) sense of gaining more power at the expense of your (Super)humanity. Ultimately though while space hulks are almost always defined as narrow corridors, there is always SOME room for variation.

Just started reading the soul drinkers omnibus, and the brokenback (A massive fusion of numerous ships from imperial traders to alien cutters) would be an awesome place to scoot and shoot around in. Ranging from the black ships of the inquisition to luxurious rogue traders, to ancient mechanicus manufacturing ships, not everything has to be narrow, spartan corridors.

I have to agree, a game focusing on some species other than "da space marinez and da spiky boys wot they'iz fightin' all da time" would be pretty sweet. I actually imagined something along the lines of the Third Person Space Marine game, after boss Grimskull gets offed, and you play as a Nob trying to take over the Waaagh! before it disintegrates completely. Get he people who wrote the Ork campaign for DoW Retribution and we'd be set :)

I can't remember where (though I think it was the Battlefleet Gothic rule book), but there's a picture somewhere of an Imperial ships hold, where hundreds of galley slaves are breech loading a capitol ships gun.

Breech loading. Capitol ship gun. Gork n' Mork, I love dis sodding game!

The level of improper responses in this thread is disgraceful.

I LOVED Vengeance of the Blood Angels, and still play it to this day - it is one of the most atmospheric games I have ever played. If they get that side of it right - the feel of being a small team against huge odds in a claustrophobic hostile setting - then I'm in.

Well it is a dead simple game so they might not fuck it up too bad, that being said if they only do the base game it will be one of the dullest, and you could just try that L4D mod in that case.

But should they somehow find talent in their ranks that lack of complexity leaves everything open for improvement, with mission that actually have a purpose towards a greater goal, upgrades, research, some story perhaps,...

The only real problem I have with this idea is getting the feel right in an FPS. Not so much the atmosphere and feel of the 40K Universe, that shouldn't be too hard to pull off, I mean the feel of slogging around in a set of Tactical Dreadnought Armour.

The usual FPS bobbing hovercraft look and feel would be fine for a Scout or standard Space Marine, but it just doesn't feel right when your character is meant to be a walking tank.

Edit: While on the subject of hypothetical games. I really want to play an Ork focused WAAAGH! game. The idea of playing a Warboss and having to slowly build up my rampaging warband as it hops from planet to planet makes me happy happy.

In all fairness if they're trying to capture a more isolated horror vibe it'll be quite hard to make the game feel that way, especially when your character is clad in massive power armour with the ability to use psychic powers whilst wielding a weapon that fires explosive shells at a tremendous rate of fire, but I don't know, that's just me.

Traditionally within a Space Hulk game you fight Genestealers, but an FPS game with only a single enemy? It will get super boring really quickly. Im not overly sure a Spacehulk setting will be right for Space Marine game, especially when horror can only really be effective when your character is presented as being weak instead of one of the most powerful soldiers within the 40K universe, unless they severely underpower the player character which will be a complete betrayal of the Warhammer 40K lore. If a Warhammer game is going a have a Space Marine as the main character, I feel that a more wide open, huge battlefields and landscapes kind of thing will be more suited towards a Space Marines style of gameplay.

Regardless, I guess we will have to wait until official detail come about.

Well, in the case of Fire Warrior, it didn't help that it was developed by Kuju Entertainment. A dev team responsible for Microsoft Train Simulator and Singstar and... well, nothing else before Fire Warrior. And even afterward, they haven't made much else worth noting. =P

Now, say, if they gave Fire Warrior to a competent developer with experience in FPS's, like saaayyy... I dunno, Monolith or something, it could have worked. But yeah, they gave it to the guys who made a train sim.

------------

OT: Considering this isn't the first time we've seen a Space Hulk FPS, this shouldn't come as a surprise really. The older Space Hulk's seemed pretty interesting to me, honestly, so here's to hoping this works out well.

Plus, seriously, the Warhammer 40K universe could use some variety in the kinds of games that are based on it. We don't need dozens of strategy games when the whole universe could be adapted into so many different kinds of genres.
